The University of Greenwich was established in 1890 at Woolwich Polytechnic and received its first CGLI certificate in 1892. In 1992, the institution gained the status of a university and was renamed as the University of Greenwich. Over the years, the university has made its place among the top academic institutions in the world. It has gained the accreditations of many prestigious organizations like CIPD, APS, and AMBA.
Notably, the University of Greenwich has three campuses. Two of these campuses, Avery Hill Campus and Greenwich Campus, are located in London while the third campus, Medway Campus, is located in Kent, England. The Greenwich campus is the university's home campus and has the Stock well Street Building that houses TV and film studios, a library, and high-tech editing suites. Also, the social and teaching spaces of the campus are located in the £25-million Dreadnought Building. The university offers many undergraduate- and postgraduate-level programmes in various fields like accounting, finance, architecture, science, business, management, engineering, arts, English, social science, history, law, marketing, nursing, pharmacy, and psychology. And, the university offers these courses through its Faculty of Architecture, Computing and Humanities, Faculty of Business School, Faculty of Education and Health, and Faculty of Engineering and Science. The university has alliances with many regional and international academic institutions to provide students with facilities like student exchange and study abroad programmes. Further, the university's industrial placement scheme is available to help students get suitable jobs.
The University of Greenwich has over 225,000 alumni across the globe. Amongst the names of notable alumni include Charles K. Kao, a well-known physicist who won a Nobel Prize in physics for pioneering the use of fiber optics in telecommunications. Malorie Blackman is the author of some famous novels like Hacker, A.N.T.I.D.O.T.E, Pig-Heart Boy, Tell Me No Lies and Dead Gorgeous. Jamie Adenuga (Jme) is a popular record producer and co-founder of Boy Better Know. Abiy Ahmed is the third Prime Minister of Ethiopia. Dave Rowntree is the drummer in the rock band, Blur. He is also an English animator, solicitor, and politician.
