About Edge Hill University

Opened as Edge Hill College in 1885, Edge Hill University is a campus-based, state-funded university. In Ormskirk, Lancashire, England, it was the first non-denominational teacher training college for females. The first male students were inducted in 1959. In 2005, Edge Hill was allowed the 'Taught Degree Awarding Powers' by the Privy Council. Notably, it became Edge Hill University on 18th May 2006. Tanya Byron was the university's founding chancellor. He was a clinical psychologist, columnist, author and broadcaster.

Edge Hill University offers various courses, including B.Sc, B.A., LLB, and teacher training programmes. It also provides postgraduate programmes, such as MBA, MPhil PGCEs and MRes. Additionally, Edge Hill University offers PhD research programmes. The university maintains a student zone, including retail and catering outlets, IT facilities and the students' union office. The building officially opened on 15th October, 2012, by Her Royal Highness the Countess of Wessex. Also, it features an indoor and outside games complex that was inaugurated by Olympic pentathlete Katarina Johnson Thompson in 2015.

The university's performing arts department was opened by the renowned British screenwriter and writer of the London 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony Frank Cottrell Boyce. The Arts Center features a 234-seat professional theatre, namely Rose Theater, and a 140-seat Studio Theater. The Catalyst serves as the library on the Ormskirk campus, as well as the student centre of services and information. The library, which opened during the 1990s, was replaced with another multi-story building later.

New students are urged to engage with the career centre of the university as early as possible to avail the advantage of the part-time jobs offered through the Edge Hill Works vacancy service. This supports students in building up their confidence and skills. Also, local employers visit the campus every week offering part-time jobs by the means of university's employer liaison exercises. In addition, the university likewise promotes summer openings at home and abroad.

The university's award winning careers centre offers help to its students and graduates, working intimately with the academic departments. The careers centre offers information about volunteering openings and placement drives. Here, educational programs include career modules, career events and employer guest speakers.
