About University of Huddersfield

The University of Huddersfield is an open university that offers various educational programs. Its history dates back to its founding as the Young Men’s Mental Improvement Society in 1841. After going through several changes, it later became a technical college in 1896. Then in 1970, the college was merged with the Oastler College of Education and became Huddersfield Polytechnic. Finally, in the year 1992, the polytechnic institution received university status to become the University of Huddersfield.

The university is nestled in the Huddersfield region of West Yorkshire, England. Its core campus is set in the south-east of the center of Huddersfield town and called Queensgate Campus. The campus is divided by a narrow canal and features a combination of teaching and facility buildings. Also, the university maintains an International Study Centre which offers degree training courses to foreign students. Presently, the institution enrolls students coming from over 130 countries.

The university also maintains seven academic schools offering a range of educational and recreational facilities to students. These schools offer programs in disciplines like applied sciences, art, design and architecture, computing and engineering, education and professional development, business, human and health sciences, music, humanities, and media.

The university has an active Students' Union with over 110 clubs and societies. The union clubs are set at the Student Central building which has a sports hall, shop, catering outlets, offices for the student magazine, namely T'Hud, and a radio station called Radio Hud. Also, there are numerous support services including welfare and the careers center to help students making an informed decision.

Apart from these facilities, it is actively linked to its alumni. It has proudly shaped a number of students who are now working in different areas of society. Some of the known alumni include Adil Ray (actor, comedian and radio and television presenter), Allison Whitmarsh (founder of Propermaid), Brian Anderson (former boxer who was British middleweight champion between 1986 and 1987) and Sir George Buckley (one of the world's leading businessmen).
