The Library Assistant works in the areas of circulation, reference assistance, and library resource management. This position functions in a complex public service environment with minimal supervision.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Some of the key duties include: staffing the Circulation Desk; providing first level contact and resolving basic customer service issues; library opening and closing; loaning and returning library material; performing renewals, holds, and patron registration; collecting fines; provide basic reference service including assisting with catalogue and database services; and providing information support and directional assistance with technology, such as copiers, printers and navigating the BU website. The Library Assistant must be able to assess information needs and recommend, interpret, and evaluate information sources. This position supports library communication activities through creation of displays and creates collection management lists for campus-wide consultation. This position processes new library resources for access and loan when there is high volume of incoming or high priority new items. The Library Assistant carries out other relevant duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

The successful candidate must have 2-3 years' post-secondary diploma or a library technician's diploma or equivalent, plus one year of related academic library experience or a comparable combination of education and experience is required. Candidates must have excellent interpersonal and good leadership skills, strong customer service orientation, as well as good oral and written communication skills are required. To be successful, candidates must have strong research and critical thinking skills, be able to work with limited supervision, work harmoniously and collaboratively as part of a team in a changing environment, and deal effectively with patrons. Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with library systems and Microsoft Office; problem solving skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail are required.

NOTE

Candidates must be available to work a variety of hours throughout the academic year, including evening and weekend shifts. Skill-based testing will be required.
