Data Lead: Net Zero Tracker

Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, School of Geography and the Environment, South Parks Road, OX1 3QY

This is an exciting opportunity to be at the heart of the project providing crucial data for assessing net zero commitments around the world – https: // www. zerotracker.net. The Net Zero Tracker is built on the dedicated and organised effort of over 200 volunteer coders in Oxford University and around the world. As well as the data being available on an open-source and real-time basis on the website, the Tracker team publishes in-depth analysis throughout the year and annual stocktake reports.

You will maintain and develop the Tracker database by contributing your own analytical skills as well as organising and guiding the team of project volunteers. You will also collaborate with project partners (from the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit, New Climate Institute and Data-Driven EnviroLab) and report to the Oxford-based Co-Investigators (Thomas Hale and Steve Smith). As key experts in the Tracker data you will help steer the project direction, as well as commenting on and helping draft reports for publication. You will participate in regular virtual meetings with the wider project consortium

The successful candidate should possess an undergraduate degree, together with some relevant experience. You will have ability to work with large datasets (including in Excel). You will possess knowledge of climate policy, in particular around mitigation and net zero emissions. The successful candidate should also be a people person, capable of recruiting, organising, and inspiring large teams of volunteers and professionals. They should be able to manage their own academic research and associated activities effectively, where applicable. Furthermore, the role requires excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present results, engage with various stakeholders, and represent the project professionally in writing and in speech. You should also have previous experience of contributing to publications and presentations.

Applications are particularly welcome and encouraged from women, black, and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in posts in SoGE. SoGE are committed to equality and values diversity.
