The School of Business and Economics (SBE) at Linnaeus University conducts research and education in business administration, economics, statistics, and tourism studies. Our task is to make people grow with the help of knowledge that researchers, teachers, and students co-create. Subject area for the position: Business administration.

Location until further notice: Växjö. Since Linnaeus University is located in both Växjö and Kalmar, travel between the two may be required.

Term and hours: The doctoral studentship is limited in time by the Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 5, Section 7). The studentship is full-time.

The Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 5, Section 2) states that those appointed to doctoral studentships shall primarily devote themselves to their doctoral studies.

Those appointed to doctoral studentships may, however, work to a limited extent with educational tasks, research, and administration. Before a Ph.D. or a doctorate degree has been awarded, however, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20 percent of full-time doctoral studies.

Job description

For the position, the doctoral student is expected to complete her thesis work in the field of marketing. The research concerns technology-based innovations and sustainability that lead to competitive business ideas and companies, and how new as well as existing companies tackle technological change and drive it. The focus must be on small and medium-sized companies in the rural areas of Småland.

Doctoral studies in business administration at Linnaeus University encompass four years of full-time, funded studies. Students will complete 240 credits, of which 90 are courses, and the dissertation corresponds to 150 credits. Compulsory courses include 30 credits in methodology.

The applicant who is accepted for doctoral studies will participate in a newly started research school and work closely with companies in the county Kronoberg, with IKEA as a main party for the current position. The research school is a unique interdisciplinary initiative from the School of Business and Economics and the Faculty of Technology at Linnaeus University. Its aim is to address challenges posed by globalization, new technologies such as automation, digitalization, and AI, and environmental and climate problems. The Kronoberg county is well known for its small and medium-sized companies, as well as large companies. The practical relevance of the thesis area and the research questions will be discussed in collaboration with companies in Kronoberg.

Eligibility

General entry requirements:

An applicant meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if the applicant

  • Has been awarded a second-cycle qualification (master's degree), or
  • has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
  • has acquired the equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
  • Specific entry requirements:

  • A minimum of 90 credits in the subject of Business Administration or in subjects linked to third-cycle studies in Business Administration or equivalent knowledge acquired otherwise in Sweden or abroad
  • at least 15 credits in second-cycle and third-cycle studies in the subject of Business Administration or subjects linked to third-cycle studies in Business Administration, including an independent academic project at first or second-cycle level
  • a good knowledge of English.
  • Assessment criteria

    The choice of a doctoral student relies on the applicant's abilities to carry out the doctoral studies successfully. The assessments pay attention to demonstrated scientific skills, course grades, abilities to cooperate with others, and oral and written proficiency in English and Swedish.

    The application

    The application should contain: (i) a short description of yourself and your interests, motivation for why you are applying, and relevant achievements and experiences; (ii) a CV; (iii) certified copies of previous degree certificates and transcripts; (iv) contact details to two referees; (v) a copy of thesis works on the Master's level or similar and other potential publications; (vi) a completed form for application to the doctoral education and (vii) applicants should also provide a preliminary research plan covering 3-5 pages. The plan should describe the planned research and how it relates to research in technology development, business ideas and business conducted at the newly started research school.

    For applicants with non-Swedish Master's education, we recommend the GRE- and TOEFL/IELTS tests. The results of the tests should be attached to the application.
