Interim Head of Central Accounting

We are seeking a dynamic and driven individual to fill the role of Interim Head of Central Accounting while the substantive postholder is seconded to a leadership role for the Financial Systems Replacement Project which is due to go live in 2027. As a leader for Central Accounting team, you will sure strategic and operational success through innovation, planning, organisational effectiveness and delivery.

We are looking for an individual with gravitas developed through extensive experiential learning and career progression. The individual will have earned credibility by operating within formal governance structures such as board, finance and audit committees.

As Interim Head of Central Accounting you will:

  • Manage the core General Ledger and other associated modules to ensure the accuracy, integrity, and security of all financial data while facilitating appropriate access to all relevant stakeholders.
  • Own the development and updating of the financial rules and guidance in which the financial community operates including the communication and training thereof
  • Develop and oversee the first and therefore completely new Research Financial Assurance Framework for the University
  • Provide leadership to a dedicated team of finance professionals
  • The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to be involved with finance transformation projects including Financial Systems Replacement (FSR) and Enhanced Financial Transparency (EFT).

    Your Skills

  • Qualified accountant with significant experience with complex accounting and reporting software
  • Good working knowledge of current UK financial reporting standards (FRSs) and the Further and Higher Education SORP
  • A strategic thinker able to work at a detailed level
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively across all levels of the organisation

    The University is supportive of hybrid working, where some work is undertaken on University premises and some in a remote working environment. This arrangement is subject to change and will not form a part of the contractual terms of the role.

    Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
