  • About This Opportunity

    We are seeking an experienced cultural worker and Repatriation Manager to support the end-to-end delivery of strategies relating to the repatriation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ancestral Remains and specific cultural objects at the University. This role encompasses delivering outcomes across all aspects of the project life cycle, including developing processes to monitor and evaluate the project, managing project deliverables and communication, facilitating stakeholder engagements and supporting project reporting requirements.

    Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Stakeholder Engagement & Communication: Coordinate project communication, lead engagement and change management activities, foster collaboration with First Nations communities and cultural institutions, and promote public outreach on repatriation through various initiatives.

  • Project Planning : Undertake research and analysis on Ancestral Remains and cultural heritage objects and conduct detailed project planning providing expert advice to ensure effective delivery of project priorities.

  • Project Administration & Management: Coordinate the repatriation of Ancestral Remains and cultural heritage objects in line with cultural protocols and legislation, while providing project support through monitoring, reporting, and developing appropriate documentation to ensure alignment with time, cost, and quality standards.

  • Project Governance & Reporting: Collaborate with the Repatriation Committee to support project governance and reporting, and plan and document repatriation activities for the UQ Repatriation Management Steering Committee while serving as Committee Secretariat.

  • About You

    Ideal candidates will have relevant qualifications and experience in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies, Anthropology, Australian History, or a related field. Postgraduate qualifications or ongoing progress towards them are highly desirable. In addition, you will possess:

  • Demonstrated experience successfully managing medium to large projects, ideally within a large and/or complex organisational context.

  • High-level interpersonal skills, including the effective liaison and negotiation skills needed to develop and maintain strong working relationships within the School/Faculty/Institute/Portfolio, the wider University community and key external stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated high level organisational ability, attention to detail and ability to work to deadlines and manage competing priorities.

  • Proven track record of collaborating with First Nations peoples, corporations and community organisations.

  • Ability to work with and handle Ancestral Remains and culturally sensitive objects, and awareness of related cultural protocols.

  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of working within relevant heritage legislation, guidelines and best practice is desirable.

  • Previous project management experience within a tertiary and/or research institution would be highly valued.

  • Mandatory requirements: You must maintain unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply (visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment). The successful candidate will also be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks including an education check and criminal history check.
