  • Role Description Directorate of Technology, Estates & Facilities - IT Services

With specialists focused on Information Technology, Estates Development, Estates Operations, and University-wide Facilities, the Directorate of Technology, Estates and Facilities collaborates to deliver solutions across both the physical and digital landscapes.

Our primary goal is to provide services and facilities that meet the needs both of the University and the broader community, as well as support the University's strategic objectives and commitment to public good by creating a stimulating learning, living and working environment.

The role will be part of the cyber security team within IT Services.

    Role

Cyber Security Operations; protecting our networks, service and information from threats, is a key priority across the Higher Education sector and here at the University of York, through investment from the University Executive Board, our Cyber Security Team must maintain an updated position in order to continue to meet the ever changing landscape of cyber and information security. We must secure our University and enable research and teaching developments.

We believe in developing our own people and investing in the future, and this role within Security Operations requires experience of cyber security but with the scope to develop skills in one or more specialist areas, and in which a high degree of trust will be placed. Security is a rapidly growing and evolving industry, and we see this as a great role for someone wanting to further explore their career in it.

The Senior Cyber Security Operations Engineer will report to the Head of Cyber Security and will be part of the senior team for cyber security and will be a delegate for the Head of Cyber Security for both internal and external matters. You will also be a leader and mentor for the Security Operations team; engineers, analysts and industry placement team members, you will have opportunities to participate in guest lectures for our students and engage with the academics on securing research and teaching.

    Skills, Experience & Qualification needed
  • An in-depth understanding of cyber security, secure working practices, technical controls and emerging threats within a large, complex, and technologically diverse organisation.
  • Proficiency in deploying, maintaining, and configuring a wide range of security technologies, including SIEM solutions, firewall solutions, cloud security centres, cyber threat intelligence and extended detection and response services, and vulnerability scanners.
  • Ability to work in and with a multi-disciplinary IT team, and develop and support progressive security across platforms, including Windows, Linux, Apple, and technologies including firewalls and VPNs.
  • As representative of the Cyber Security Team you may attend working groups on PCI DSS, ISO27001 and Cyber Essentials and must be able to develop and deliver, in collaboration, technical recommendations based on your experience of one or more of these standards.
  • You will be involved in initiatives and projects to improve technology and cyber security delivery to the university and may be responsible for delivering aspects of technology based change activities.
  • You will be actively supporting university staff and students with Cyber Security issues or queries and must be able to support users of varying ability.
  • Evidence of being able to uphold our behaviours and implement our IT Services principles.
