About the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPED)The Department of Health and Physical Education, Faculty of Health, Community and Education at Mount Royal University invites applications for a 2-year limited term position which will commence 15 August 2025, subject to final budgetary approval, at the Rank of Assistant Professor. The Department of Health and Physical Education offers a fresh approach to health and physical education that is unique to Western Canada. Mount Royal's distinctive four-year program emphasizes a comprehensive approach to health and physical education while providing students with valuable hands-on experiential learning opportunities in- and outside the classroom.
The Department currently offers a Bachelor of Health and Physical Education degree with specializations in four majors (Athletic Therapy, Ecotourism and Outdoor Leadership, Physical Literacy, and Sport and Recreation Management) and a Post Bachelor's certificate in Athletic Therapy.
About the RoleNew faculty are hired into one of two work patterns. The teaching/scholarship/service pattern (TSS) focuses on teaching with the requirement that the faculty member be involved in a research program as well as service to the Mount Royal community. The teaching/service pattern (TS) focuses on teaching and service only. The successful candidate for this role will be hired into the teaching/service pattern (TS). The successful candidate will teach the equivalent of eight three-credit-hour courses per academic year (typically four courses in each of the fall and winter semesters). There is an option to change work patterns after tenure.
The department is seeking an individual with an ability to teach in one or more areas of specialization. All applicants should have a completed PhD with preference for expertise in the fields of physical literacy and/or tourism. The successful candidate will be able to teach in one or more of the following areas (in order of priority):
● History and Sociology of Sport ● Growth and Development ● Social and Emotional Domains of Physical Literacy ● Tourism
