We have an excellent opportunity to join the teaching team on the Certificate of Higher Education, Foundation Year and BA programmes as an Associate Lecturer at Birkbeck, University of London.

Your role will be to deliver teaching to Birkbeck students, in order to enable them to complete their studies successfully and undertake all related course administrative duties as required. Your main responsibility will be preparation, teaching, administration and assessment the Understanding Research Methods for Psychology module, which is a Level 4 module offered as part of our Certificate of Higher Education, Accelerated Foundation Year and BA programmes.

The module offers an introduction to research methods, with a focus on ethics, descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests, and prepared students for further study of psychological research methods.

The module is delivered on Tuesday afternoon, 2:00pm – 5:00pm and Tuesday evenings, 6:00 pm – 9:00pm (Please indicate preference on your application or during interview) , and two Saturdays (9th October and 14th December) for 11 weeks from October 2024 to December 2024.

In addition to the criteria specified in the job pack, the minimum requirements for selection are listed below:

  • A degree in Psychology.
  • Relevant teaching experience, working with adult students within the HE sector.
  • A good understanding of the needs of full and part-time adult learners and be able to relate well to their individual needs and engage their interest and enthusiasm.
  • Experience of (or willingness to develop) a wide range of teaching and assessment methods.
  • Demonstrably effective communication, interpersonal and presentation skills across a range of relevant contexts.
  • A working knowledge of IT including Word, Excel, e-mail and experience of (or willingness to use) Moodle & Teams.
  • Particularly able to work both as part of a team and independently as appropriate.
  • Willing to engage in reflective practice.
  • Please note: candidates need to demonstrate competence or significant potential in all areas.

    Desirable:

  • Postgraduate degree/s in a relevant area
  • A teaching qualification
  • The successful candidate will be required to teach all sessions on the module.

    Remuneration

    Starting rate £66.70 per hour, inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay for contact hours worked.

    Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous. The hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier' which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
