Department The Department of Education is a founding department of the University of York. It is underpinned by our core values; fairness, respect, equality, and compassion. We are renowned for excellence in research, ranking 5th in REF 2021, and teaching, as recognised by our Teaching Excellence Framework Gold award.

Role The Department of Education is seeking to appoint a Lecturer (0.5fte) to work on the department's new PGCE Primary programme. The appointee will work alongside the Primary Programme Leader and develop teaching and learning strategy in relation to Primary ITT, and the design and implementation of the Primary ITT curriculum. They will also work alongside the current Director of Initial Teacher Training (DITT) (who also leads on secondary courses) to ensure compliance for Ofsted purposes.

The Department has a long track record of working with schools to deliver research- informed professional teacher training courses and already offers a secondary University of York PGCE programme and School Direct routes. From 2024/25 our Lead Partner is Pathfinder TSH, which is where the PGCE Primary course will be based in the first instance.

As a PGCE ITT Lecturer, the role includes responsibility for helping to design and then deliver the Professional Learning programme for approximately 20-50 students annually and the successful applicant will contribute to subject curriculum area teaching, in particular the appointee will need to have expertise in phonics (researched based and/or track record of successful teaching of phonics). Trainees on both the university-led PGCE and Lead Partner pathways benefit from internationally recognised academics and curriculum developers working alongside experienced teachers from local partner schools to contribute to course development and delivery.

    Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • PhD in Education or equivalent experience
  • Extensive knowledge in primary education to design and develop teaching programmes and the provision of learning support across different levels of academic activity
  • Clear evidence of successful phonics teaching and expertise, as applied to primary education
  • Ability to teach at any level within area of expertise, and across a range of subjects at a more introductory level, and demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment in the process of teaching
  • Ability to present specialist material in a logical, coherent and interesting manner, both to students and to fellow specialists
  • Informal enquiries to Professor Claire Ball-Smith - Director of Initial Teacher Training ([email protected]) or Dr Emma Clarke ([email protected]) - Primary Programme Leader

    Condition of employment

This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. Consequently, all applicants will be asked to declare both unspent and spent convictions on their application form.

Appointment of the successful candidate will be conditional on a Disclosure and Barring Service check.

The University strives to be diverse and inclusive – a place where we can ALL be ourselves.

We particularly encourage applications from people who identify as Black, Asian or from a Minority Ethnic background, who are underrepresented at the University.
