Welcome to Linnaeus University! Here you'll meet 2 200 staff members and 40 000 students, all united in following the vision to set knowledge in motion for a sustainable societal development. With us, research and education are conducted with an eye towards the future. Our proximity to the business world, both locally and globally, gives us a wide reach and the ability to create change that makes an impact. All that's needed is a place where ideas have the space to meet and grow. That's what we've created – and you are invited.

Change starts here!

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities – which is one of five faculties at Linnaeus University – is a dynamic, flexible, and international knowledge environment that spans a wide range of subjects in the arts and humanities. We build complete academic environments, where the interaction between education, research, and collaboration creates a driving force for quality at the university and in the wider community.

Digital humanities is part of the Department of Cultural Sciences, which includes the subjects archaeology, library and information science, history, human and physical geography, cultural sociology, and religious studies. Library and information science and digital humanities are part of the same unit, and currently comprise 13 people who primarily conduct research in the areas of knowledge organisation, digital humanities, and library and cultural policy. Education in digital humanities is offered at the master's level and online through an international master's programme.

Subject area for the position: Digital humanities

Location until further notice: Växjö. Since Linnaeus University is located in both Växjö and Kalmar, travel between the two locations may be required.

Form of employment and hours: The position is full time for four years. Employment may be extended for a maximum of two years, if additional time is needed to achieve the purpose of the position, due to the associate senior lecturer's sick or parental leave, or other special reasons.

According to the Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 4, Section 12 c), an associate senior lecturer must, on application, be promoted to senior lecturer if they are (i) eligible for employment as a senior lecturer, and (ii) assessed as suitable for such an appointment in accordance with the assessment criteria used for the position. Such a promotion entails employment as a senior lecturer until further notice. The application for promotion must be submitted within the employment period for the position as an associate senior lecturer.

Starting date: 1 January 2025, or as agreed. A six-month probationary period applies.

Job description We are looking for an associate senior lecturer with a clear profile in one or more of the areas of digital cultural heritage, digital history, digital literary studies, digital religion, digital philosophy, and digital art history, who will be able to actively contribute to the development of the subject of digital humanities at Linnaeus University as well as to research, resource development, and the administration of national initiatives related to DARIAH-EU, the pan-European infrastructure for arts and humanities research.

The position is primarily focused on research (50%) – partly research and development work within DARIAH-EU, and partly individual research. The work with DARIAH-EU includes, among other things, creating open educational resources in the field of digital humanities for the DARIAH Campus or DARIAH Teach platforms, related to subjects within the candidate's own area of expertise and in collaboration with other digital humanities researchers at Linnaeus University, as well as conducting a comprehensive survey of Huminfra stakeholders. The position also includes coordinating national DARIAH events at the Swedish institutions involved in the national research infrastructure Huminfra, including conducting their own training sessions at Huminfra events.

The position also includes teaching and supervision of degree projects in the international online master's programme in digital humanities, which includes subject areas such as digital cultural heritage, digital religion, digital history, or digital literary studies.

Qualifications Anyone who has been awarded a doctorate in a humanities subject, and who has shown interest in issues or used methods relevant to the digital humanities field, or who has the equivalent academic competence, is qualified for the position of associate senior lecturer.

Consideration shall primarily be given to applicants who have been awarded a doctorate, or who have achieved competence equivalent to a doctorate, no earlier than five years prior to the deadline for the application for the position of associate senior lecturer. Applicants who have been awarded a doctorate, or who have achieved competence equivalent to a doctorate, at an earlier point in time may, however, be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons include sick leave, parental leave, and other similar circumstances. (The Higher Education Ordinance, Ch 4, S 4a).

The candidate should also have

  • an excellent command of spoken and written English
  • a good command of spoken and written Swedish, or the ability to acquire this during the first year of employment.
  • Assessment criteria

    Other assessment criteria:

  • a clear profile in one or more of the areas of digital cultural heritage, digital history, digital literary studies, digital religion, digital philosophy, and digital art history

  • experience in developing open-source tools for research
  • experience in creating open educational resources in digital humanities
  • documented experience of research using surveys and interviews

  • We place emphasis on personal suitability.

When the university employs new teachers, the choice should fall on those applicants who, based on a qualitative holistic assessment of competence and skills, are considered most likely to successfully perform and develop relevant tasks and contribute to successful development of the organisation.

If the candidate applies for promotion to senior lecturer, the following assessment criteria will be used:

The assessment of research expertise should be guided by the independence, volume, and quality of the candidate's research.

Teaching expertise should be apparent from pedagogical work, including development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and examination.
