About the LibraryHoused in the Riddell Library and Learning Centre, the University Library is an integral part of the MRU experience. The services, facilities, programming and expertise available in the Library support innovative teaching, learning, and scholarship across campus.
The Library includes the Archives and Special Collections, and specialized and technology-enriched teaching and learning spaces, including information literacy classrooms, a Maker Studio, audio production rooms, and a range of visualization, simulation, and immersive spaces. The Library team consists of approximately 60 employees. About the RoleReporting to the Head, Collections & Content, the Collections Services Technician, Archives and Special Collections is responsible for acquisitions, cataloguing, and metadata functions within the Collections Services unit, as well as supporting the Archives and Special Collections unit through public service and archival tasks. Acquisitions duties include verifying, checking, ordering, receiving, and processing payments for a wide range of materials (including print, audio-visual (AV), and digital), ensuring timely user access to the library's collections via the library automated system. Cataloguing and metadata duties include both original and copy cataloguing, classification of a variety of library materials (print, electronic, etc) for inclusion in the library's collection, and adherence to library standards and local policies and procedures. Archival duties include rehousing records for storage and preservation, developing and maintaining finding aids, ordering and cataloguing rare books, and instructing and assisting users with archival resources.
This position is full-time (35 hours per week on-campus, working Monday to Friday).
ResponsibilitiesOrder Processing: Tracks and processes orders using ILS and acquisitions tools, supporting various purchasing models (e.g., one-time, subscription, patron-driven).
Resource Access & Coordination: Assists with maintaining electronic resource access, verifies entitlement lists, and coordinates with subject selectors and vendors.
Workflow Optimization: Reconciles invoices and credit card statements, ensuring timely and accurate payments while adopting new tools and methods to improve ordering processes.
Cataloguing: Catalogues and classifies a variety of materials, applying national, international, and local standards (including MARC and RDA) to ensure accurate and accessible records.
Inclusive Practices: Applies critical and inclusive cataloguing principles to enhance user access and address representation in metadata.
Metadata Management: Utilizes knowledge of bibliographic records, subject headings, and metadata management tools (including MarcEdit and Alma Metadata Editor) to manage local and shared records, enhancing resource discoverability.
Acquisition Support: Assists the Archivist in acquiring materials, developing finding aids using the Rules for Archival Description (RAD), and applying cataloguing standards to archival records.
Preservation: Prepares records for storage (boxing, foldering, labeling), maintains storage location data for preservation and retrieval, and performs preservation tasks (including rehousing, encapsulation, scanning, and minor conservation actions).
User Assistance: Provides research support in person or by email/chat, assists with outreach projects and exhibits, and instructs users on the use of archival resources.
Library Information Technology diploma required; Archives-specific training preferred; MLIS or bachelor's degree an asset.
Experience in library collections services and working with archival materials and rare books.
Experience in a public-facing role, demonstrating strong skills in customer services, as well as strong written and oral communication.
Experience with original and copy cataloguing using RAD, MARC, and RDA standards, as well as inclusive cataloguing practices.
Proficiency in digitization technologies, and practices for physical and digital collections.
Proficiency with library ordering systems (e.g., GOBI) or online bookstores (e.g., Amazon).
Skilled in office software for workflow management (eg. Google Workspace, Microsoft suite)
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with high accuracy.
Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
Knowledge of acquisitions and access models (e.g., approval plans, firm orders, subscriptions, open access). Skilled in invoice reconciliation and statement management.
Industry knowledge of current and emerging metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core, OAI, MODS, BIBFRAME, linked data), integrated library systems, electronic acquisitions processes, and resource management processes
Experience in managing electronic resources and/or an understanding of trends in electronic resource management is desirable.
Salary: $55,982- $70,841 per annum
