About the University of Oxford

The University of Oxford is a complex and stimulating organisation, which enjoys an international reputation as a world-class centre of excellence in research and teaching. It employs over 10,000 staff and has a student population of over 22,000. The Medical Sciences Division is the largest of the four academic divisions within the University and is internationally recognised as a centre of excellence for biomedical and clinical research and teaching. In the Times Higher Education subject rankings for 2022, Oxford was, for the 11th year running, ranked first in the world for Clinical, Pre- Clinical and Health subjects.

About the Department of Biomedical Services (BMS)

BMS provides Oxford's scientists with the experimental resources they need to carry out their ground-breaking research. Our mission is to support science of the highest quality by educating and training University researchers working with animals, in a spirit of compassion and respect for animal welfare.

About the role of Head of Compliance

As our core purpose is to provide animals for experimental research work we must be fully compliant with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act and other appropriate legislation. Compliance, therefore, is our by-word, and the University's Registrar as the Establishment Licence Holder, requires robust assurance that we comply with the legal and regulatory framework that wraps around our core function and drives our practices in animal welfare.

The Head of Compliance will hold those working with animals to account on a micro and macro level, providing a balanced approach within which rigorous assurance can be provided. In doing so, the Head of Compliance will want to build on the fundamental parts of their remit to ensure these are both efficient and effective

As one of the four members of the BMS's Senior Leadership Team, you will be instrumental in making key strategic decisions for the department and implementing key projects that will be vital in the transformation process of the department.

The Head of Compliance will have three main responsibilities; a Management and Leadership role, Named Persons including Named Veterinary Surgeons, and Compliance. This is a challenging job, but a rewarding one. The role provides scope for a strong leader with a compliance background who has the experience to shape our compliance landscape and be an advocate of organisational change.

If you are a resilient leader with an unrivalled track record and would like to know more, James Bussell, Director of BMS, is available for an informal conversation by contacting [email protected]

The closing date for receipt of applications is 17:00 on Friday 27 September 2024.

Interviews will be on 29th October 2024.
