How will you contribute?

The Structural Composites (SC) Unit at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is seeking a Senior Research & Technology Associate with specialized expertise in prepreg manufacturing for polymer-based composite materials. The SC Unit is committed to developing next-generation, high-performance sustainable polymer composites. Aligned with this ambition, a strong emphasis is placed on the development of prepreg materials, their manufacturing, and processing techniques, particularly for applications requiring high mechanical performance and multifunctionality.

In this framework, the position involves significant contributions throughout the entire development chain for semi-finished products, from fibre surface treatment, polymer formulations, impregnation techniques to curing processes, i) developing, through technology upgrade and instrumentation, and ii) optimizing these process steps for the best quality control and material properties. Considered as a plus, the role involves experience in the field of fibre surface treatment techniques (i.e., wet and dry) to customize fibre- matrix adhesion and interface properties.

You will be integral to ongoing R&D efforts and project management, focused on both industrial and academic collaborations.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and demonstrate innovative thermoset and thermoplastic prepreg materials, towards improved efficiency and performance.
  • Develop and optimise the prepreg manufacturing pilot line, towards novel fibre/matrix combinations, improved efficiency and quality control (i.e. on-line monitoring).
  • Develop and/or customize (wet / dry) surface treatments for fiber-based semi-finished products, with the aim of improving fiber/matrix interface performance through advanced surface modification techniques.
  • Supervise characterization and testing aspects, relating to polymer processing, surface adhesion, interfacial bonding, and mechanical properties of composites.
  • Lead and manage complex, multi-year national and international R&D projects related prepregs and composites processing
  • Collaborate with industrial and academic partners to advance technology transfer and commercialization of surface treatment and prepreg innovations.
  • Publish in high-impact journals and present findings at international conferences.
  • Secure external funding for surface treatment and prepreg-related projects, and build a portfolio of research and industry partnerships.
  • Is Your profile described below? Are you our future colleague? Apply

    now!

  • Education : Ph.D. in Materials Science , Chemistry , Polymer Composites Engineering , Surface Engineering , or related field.

  • Experience : Between 8 and 20 years post-Ph.D., with strong expertise in and composite prepreg manufacturing is a must.

  • Surface treatment technologies experience is a plus.

  • Industrial experience is a must.

  • Proven expertise in prepreg manufacturing , including resin systems, curing processes, and quality control measures.

  • Strong technical skills in equipment modification and process optimization for surface treatment and prepreg production.
  • Deep knowledge of fiber/matrix interface optimization , including experience with surface treatments (plasma, chemical, or mechanical methods).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage large-scale R&D projects with industrial partners, particularly in surface treatment for fiber-reinforced composites and prepreg manufacturing.
  • Experience in technology transfer, patent development, and industry collaboration.
  • Track record of publications, patents, and project leadership in surface treatments, prepreg manufacturing and composite material processing.

  • Excellent team collaboration skills in an international research setting.

  • Strong communication skills in English; knowledge of French, German, or Luxembourgish is an asset.
  • This is a permanent position tailored for a seasoned researcher with strong technical expertise in prepreg composite manufacturing and fibres surface treatment who can drive forward LIST's strategic goals in high-performance composite development.
