Applications are invited for an experienced Mechanical Technician to fabricate components and assemble plant for a novel, microwave plasma processing facility.
The project is being funded through the STFC Early-Stage Research and Development Scheme APP7279. The plasma uses a bespoke Microwave mode converter whose design was inspired from accelerator science. The project will build on existing knowledge by pursuing an electrodeless MW plasma that is more efficient, has minimal component degradation with time and is easier to scale up than other MW plasmas. Plasmas are particularly suitable for processing vapours and gases but can also process fine particulates and droplets. The principle application is gasification of organic waste.
You will work alongside a Chemical Engineering Postdoctoral Research Associate and will undertake work as directed by the Principal and Associate Academic Investigators.
You should be able to manufacture components to a high precision by machining or fabrication as required using standard workshop facilities, be able to assemble plant requiring gas and water supplies, be able to assist with mechanical design, be able to create CAD drawings to a high standard and generate G-code for CNC machining. Ability to undertake TIG welding is desirable.
In the role, you will provide assistance to undergraduate students who have projects which utilise the facility. Occasionally you may be called upon to provide support to other teaching activities within the School of Engineering.
