Post-Doctoral/Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher, School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES)

48 Months, Fixed-Term, Whole-Time Post

Position Summary

Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Researcher / Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher (depending on experience) at the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES).

UCC are pleased to offer a 4-year Post-Doctoral/Senior Post-Doctoral Research Assistant position funded by, and in collaboration with, the National Parks and Wildlife Service. This represents an opportunity to conduct applied research rooted in theoretical ecology as part of a team that brings together a range of skills and fields of expertise: conservation, landscape and spatial ecology, field ornithology, and numerical skills. The postdoc will involve collecting new data on the population ecology of Hen Harriers in Ireland, collating existing data generated by a variety of sources, including national surveys, national land maps, and GPS/satellite tag tracking data. There may also be a need to track additional Harriers. The expected outputs will include scientific publications and a report that will inform policy on the conservation of one of the most threatened upland bird species in Europe, thus helping to meet obligations under the EU Birds Directive (2009/147/EC). It is expected that the successful candidate will have an opportunity to work closely with two other 4-year postdocs working on Red Grouse and human- wildlife conflicts and to supervise undergrad/MSc/PhD students on related topics. The successful candidate will be based in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at UCC.

The successful candidate will be passionate about ecology and conservation and will have a PhD in a project-relevant discipline (e.g. ornithology, spatial ecology) with strong analytical skills (GIS/spatial modelling/statistical modelling) and with evidence of the ability to publish in international peer- reviewed journals. They will be highly motivated, with a keen interest in how land-use influences wildlife, ideally with experience working with raptors or birds in general. Practical field skills will be essential, while experience bird ringing and GPS/satellite-tagging may be useful. A full driving licence is essential.

Successful applicants will work at University College Cork and will work under the direction of Prof. John Quinn in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Dr Paul Holloway in the School of Geography (UCC), supported by Dr Sinéad Cummins of the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
