  • About This Opportunity

    We are seeking a multi-skilled Postdoctoral Research Fellow for a 9-month fixed-term appointment. You will work on the technology and engineering development of the data-driven and machine learning aided Discrete Element Method (DEM) modelling of shaft furnace process for the zero-emission ironmaking with hydrogen. The main focus of the project is about modelling of particle flow in shaft furnace ironmaking.

    Key responsibilities will include:

  • Research and Development : Design and develop technical solutions for lump iron ore pre-reduction using hydrogen, including process modelling with machine learning-aided CFD-DEM technology, hydrogen reactions, heating, energy flow, and optimisation for efficiency.

  • Collaboration and Integration : Work with multidisciplinary teams to execute innovative R&D projects, integrate PhD student contributions for scale-up, and demonstrate findings to stakeholders while fostering relationships with industrial and academic partners.

  • Knowledge Dissemination and IP Management : Analyse and publish high- quality scientific reports and papers, communicate research outcomes effectively, and identify intellectual property for protection through university procedures.

  • Teaching : Contribute to undergraduate or postgraduate teaching, ensuring high-quality outcomes and continuous improvement based on feedback.

  • Supervision and Mentorship : Supervise or co-supervise undergraduate, master's, and PhD research students, demonstrating personal effectiveness in guiding researcher development and enhancing supervisee performance through feedback, coaching, and professional development.

  • Staff Management and Conflict Resolution : Manage research support staff in line with university policies, addressing performance, grievances, and conflicts promptly and effectively throughout the employee lifecycle.

  • Unit Support and Internal Service : Demonstrate citizenship aligned with UQ values by actively participating in unit priorities, supporting colleagues during absences, and contributing to internal service roles, decision-making, and committees.

  • External Engagement and Collaboration : Engage in service activities beyond the unit, fostering relationships with industry, government, professional bodies, and the broader community.

    About You
  • A PhD in chemical, metallurgical, or materials engineering with research experience and publications in modelling and simulation for iron and steelmaking, chemical engineering, or related industries.

  • Strong background and solid knowledge in chemical/metallurgical/materials engineering, with impactful research and publications in the field.

  • Extensive experience in data-driven and machine learning-aided modelling for metallurgical/materials engineering, including material design, process design, and optimisation.

  • Proficient in Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulation with strong experience or sound knowledge.

  • Proven involvement in R&D projects for industries in academic or corporate settings.

  • Ability to participate actively in discussions, oral presentations, and debates in English, and to write detailed reports and journal papers efficiently.

  • Demonstrated capacity to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team while leading specific projects.

  • A strong record of scientific publications in high-impact journals, with creativity and resourcefulness in solving complex research challenges.

  • The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre- employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, criminal check, education check, AHPRA registration, mandatory immunisations, first aid and/or CPR certification, blue card check, etc.
