Tourism Studies is a well-established subject at Dalarna University and the Department of Culture and Society. We are looking for a professor who wants join our strong research environment and be involved in building up a new doctoral program in the area of sustainable societies and organizations, with a focus on sustainable destination development.

The research environment currently consists of senior researchers and lecturers and doctoral students who work in various externally funded projects with specialisations such as place and destination development, sustainable tourism behaviour, rural entrepreneurship, tourism mobility, working conditions and segregation linked to both society and working life. Much of the research takes place in collaboration with other subjects e.g Working Life Science, Human Geography and Political Science with external partners in the hospitality industry, local and regional organisations.

A hallmark of Dalarna University and tourism studies is research in collaboration with the surrounding community. One hub is the research centre CeTLeR (Centre for Tourism and Leisure Research). The centre is an arena where both research and education contribute to the development of learning and knowledge about tourism, leisure and hospitality - regionally, nationally and internationally.

Tourism studies offer programmes at bachelor's and master's level that are aimed at both national and international students. The educational profiles are tourism, destination development and sustainability. The future doctoral education in sustainable place development reflects the content of the currently well-established research in tourism studies, working life science and human geography.

Your working day as a professor As a professor at Dalarna University, you are expected to take a leading role in the development of the research and educational environment in tourism studies. This means that you must be actively involved in both research and education and initiate growth and development in the subject. This role also includes carrying out both high-quality research and education and taking collegial responsibility.

In addition to teaching, you are expected to take the lead in ensuring the quality and further development of our education at all levels. An important part of the job is to build up and develop the future doctoral education. When it comes to research, in addition to being an active researcher who brings in external funding and publishes in reputable journals, you must also be able to inspire and support junior researchers and be able to contribute to a vibrant and strong research environment.

Are you the person we are looking for? To be eligible for the position of professor, the applicant must have demonstrated both teaching and research expertise.

In assessing research expertise, particular emphasis is placed on:

  • Strong ties in the research community
  • Breadth and depth of research in tourism studies, with background in either tourism studies or another related discipline
  • Independence and an ability to innovate as a researcher
  • The scope of research demonstrated through nationally and internationally published work
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain external funding for research projects as the main applicant
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with the surrounding community through successful research cooperation, external collaborative projects or communication of research results
  • In assessing teaching expertise, special emphasis is placed on:

  • Ability to create conditions for students' learning and the ability to create commitment and interest in the subject
  • Experience of supervision in doctoral education, from admission to final public defence
  • Experience of teaching at undergraduate, advanced and doctoral levels
  • Training in teaching and learning in higher education, in particular, qualifying training in teaching and learning in higher education corresponding to SUHF's recommendations is of importance
  • For this position, you must have

    - documented experience of supervision at doctoral level - proficiency in English.

    It is a merit if you have - Good interpersonal skills and experience of academic leadership. - Language skills in Swedish (or acquire within two years)

    The position The position is a full time permanent position, starting in the autumn of 2025. Dalarna University is operates in two locations. The placement for this position is Borlänge, but some work may be in Falun.
