I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

Job Description Summary:

GW's Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine (MITM) conducts innovative, fundamental, basic and translational research for HIV/AIDS and neglected tropical diseases. MITM has a strong tradition of training and policy advocacy for these infectious and parasitic diseases, which initiate and perpetuate poverty and suffering worldwide. Additional information on MITM can be found at the following link: https:// smhs.gwu.edu/microbiology/

MITM is in search of a full-time Research Assistant for Dr. Hovel- Miner's laboratory. The Hovel-Miner Laboratory is using innovative genetic tools to investigate gene functions in the trypanosomatid parasites. Specifically, in the African trypanosome (T. brucei spp.) the lab is using forward genetic methods to identify genes that promote drug resistance and elucidating genetic regulatory pathways that lead to parasitic survival during drug treatment. Currently, we are investigating novel genes that effect redox and ROS biology in the mitochondrion. The laboratory consists of interdependent work platforms that include basic molecular biology, parasite genetics, parasite phenotypic analysis (using an array of assays), and next- generation sequencing based genetic screens that are analyzed bioinformatically.

This research support position contributes to the research and development of the Hovel-Miner Lab by assisting with ongoing and independently developed experiments. The core responsibilities of this position include assisting with the execution of experiments planned by Dr. Hovel-Miner, or other senior staff, data collection, supervised data analysis, and detailed notes and record keeping. The position may assist with preparation of figures for presentation, manuscript publication, or grant submissions. The position also includes lab management, supply ordering, and day to day upkeep of laboratory equipment.

Additional Lab Duties/ Responsibilities Include:

  • Sterile technique
  • Assist in growth and maintenance of Trypanosoma brucei in cell culture.
  • Bacterial growth
  • Assist in nucleic acid isolations: genomic DNA, plasmid DNA, and RNA.
  • Assist with flow-cytometry and other cell biology approaches
  • Assist in T. brucei cell line generation / mutational analyses
  • Assist in mid-range scale forward genetic screens (liters of cells grown)
  • Assist with planning and scheduling experiments consistent with the timeline and objectives of ongoing research projects.
  • Assist with routine general molecular biology approaches such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, and restriction digests.
  • Assist in preparation of DNA libraries for next-generation sequence analysis.
  • Assist in data management and analysis
  • Perform preparation of specialized T. brucei media.
  • Assist in general laboratory upkeep.
  • Assist in ordering supplies and maintaining lab stocks.
  • Assist in equipment maintenance.
  • Keep meticulous scientific records in a digital notebook.
  • Participate in regular lab meetings.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
  • Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a BA/BS in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, microbiology, or related field
  • Laboratory research experience
  • Good aseptic technique
  • Experience in bacterial growth and media preparation
  • Experience in nucleic acid extractions, PCR, and gel electrophoresis
  • Molecular cloning experience a plus
  • Preparation of next-generation sequencing samples is a plus
  • Experience with bioinformatic analyses
  • Biopython coding experience is a plus
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills highly desired
  • Ability to work well with others on a scientific team highly desired
  • Typical Hiring Range Commensurate with Experience.
