Research Assistant

College of Health Wellbeing&Life; Science Other Grade 5 - £25,742 to £29,605 (pro rata) dependent on experience

The Role

We are recruiting for a motivated and enthusiastic Research Assistant to work in our Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre (BMRC) and join the research group of Dr Nik Georgopoulos. The post is supported by funding which is part of the newly established research agreement between Sheffield Hallam University and Paxman Ltd, the international pioneers in scalp cooling devices.

The aim of the project is to use cell models to understand the mechanisms by which cooling protects human cells from chemotherapy drug-mediated toxicities. The aim is to provide evidence for the efficacy of the Paxman scalp and limb cooling devices in reducing the main side effects of chemotherapy treatment in cancer patients and to enhance the efficacy of such devices, and thus transform the lives of millions of cancer patients worldwide.

You will have experience in cell and molecular biology techniques (cell culture, imaging/microscopy, proliferation/death assays, flow cytometry), and particularly experience with primary human skin and/or neuronal cells. Experience with genetic manipulation of primary skin cell cultures using lentivirus-based transduction systems is also essential. Prior knowledge or experience in working with induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) is desirable. The assistant will undertake research tasks to support PhD and Master's level students. General lab management duties will also be required to support the group.

This role is funded for 12 months in the first instance, but as it is part of core funding by the industrial partner (Paxman), the aim is to extend the position on an annual basis.

We welcome applications for flexible working arrangements.

The Team

You will be joining a multidisciplinary research environment within the BMRC, a vibrant research centre with excellent facilities. You will experience a welcoming and inclusive research group which comprises both staff and postgraduate students, supported by the excellent technical team at the BMRC.

The BMRC sits within the College of Health, Wellbeing and Life Sciences.
