  • About the Role

    The Research Associate will contribute to the research efforts of UniSA STEM, in particular will undertake research on the projects titled “A development program for future revision of AS/NSZ 4063.1:2010 Characterization of structural timber Part 1: Test methods” and “Characterising utility performance and in-grade properties of solid structural timber recovered from radiata pine second thinning logs (T2), third logs from clear fell, and core wood from current sawlogs”, the latter in collaboration with the University of Tasmania commissioned by the Forest and Wood Products Australia Limited.

    Core Responsibilities

  • Undertake research under limited supervision to achieve project grant outcomes; i.e. undertaking experiments to improve understanding of the structural behaviour of timber under varying moisture and temperature conditions and characterising mechanical and utility performance of timber boards obtained from T2, top logs and core wood
  • Design and perform a range of experiments including appropriate controls to achieve planned research outcomes
  • Prepare or contribute to the preparation of refereed journal publications, conference and seminar papers arising from the research
  • Provide advice to post graduate students in the appointee's area of expertise
  • Undertake administrative duties associated with relevant research projects, as required from time to time
  • Essential Skills and Experience

  • A postgraduate qualification in an appropriate Science or Engineering area relevant to the research area
  • Evidence of high quality research output commensurate with the length of research career, which is published and presented in appropriate forums
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills demonstrated through written work such as research reports, research publications and educational materials, and through effective liaison with external partners, colleagues and students
  • Ability to plan and execute testing and research in timber engineering with stakeholders
  • Ability to operate timber testing equipment and proven track record of using those equipment in timber research
