The Position

The School of Education is currently recruiting for a Science of Language and Reading coach to work within the Science of Language and Reading (SOLAR) Lab as part of the Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) and SOLAR Lab professional learning program in schools research project. The SOLAR Lab was established in the La Trobe School of Education in 2020, to assist educators, policymakers, and clinicians to adopt well-established, scientific approaches to improve how children are taught to read and how struggling learners are identified and supported at the earliest opportunity

The coach will be employed casually for 2025 which reflects Year 2 of the oveall research project. The coach will be employed for eight hours per fortnight, for 40 weeks of the year (pro-rata 2025) at one school in the Geelong area (Victoria).

The key function of this position will be to provide professional instructional coaching in line with the Student Focused Coaching model adopted by the project team (for which training will be provided) to teachers in project schools, to support the implementation of a structured literacy instruction approach in the early years of primary school (Foundation to Year 2).

Key Skills

  • Coaches will be either qualified classroom teachers, instructional leaders, speech-language pathologists, or educational and developmental psychologists and be able to demonstrate knowledge of and commitment to the science of language and reading at a school level.
  • Completion of a bachelor's degree (minimum) in a relevant discipline is required.
  • Experience of successful undergraduate teaching and/or school classroom teaching / clinical practice related to language and/or literacy.
  • A knowledge of contemporary issues and challenges in primary education, either from a teaching or a clinical perspective.
