Education is conducted in 12 different main fields of study and within the framework of several different programmes. The research concerns world languages and their literatures from a broad contextualisation and from a wide range of theoretical foundations and specific applications.

Subject description

The subject English is oriented towards linguistics and literary studies with degree-awarding powers at all levels, including doctoral studies. In addition to freestanding courses, the subject is included in various degree programmes at the department, such as the Master's Programme in Language and Intercultural Communication, the Subject Teacher Programme and the Nordic Master's Programme for Foreign Language Teachers. The subject offers courses both on campus and online, and is committed to expanding online teaching and blended learning within the on-campus courses. Research in English is mainly conducted in linguistics and literary studies. The research carried out in English is also part of the Department's interdisciplinary research domains.

Duties

The position includes teaching, supervision, testing and assessment in English with a specialisation in literary studies at the Bachelor's (first cycle) and Master's (second cycle) level, both on campus and online, and both in freestanding courses (e.g. literary theory and methodology, literary and cultural history, academic communication) and in the Subject Teacher Programme (e.g. work placement and literature didactics), both on campus and online.

Duties also include course development and administrative tasks, such as course responsibility and work with the University's learning platform. There may be some evening teaching. The applicant is expected to contribute to the activities of the entire subject and the entire department, which requires good cooperation skills and may involve teaching not only in English but eventually also in Swedish. It is expected that within two years you will be prepared to contribute in Swedish to the education, for example in interdisciplinary courses and programmes.

The position includes the applicant's own research, and the applicant is expected to publish their research results and actively pursue research funding from leading Swedish and international research funders.

The holder of the position is expected to be present at the department and participate in the ongoing work on site. The work in the subject is conducted in a teaching team, and the successful candidate is expected to contribute constructively in a collegial spirit, both to the subject and to the department as a whole.

Qualifications

Qualifications for employment as a teacher are specified in Chapter 4, Sections 3–4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg's own appointment regulations.

To be considered for the position, the applicant must hold a PhD in English or in another subject that the employer deems relevant to the duties of the position (e.g. literary studies or literature didactics).

Assessment criteria

Assessment criteria for employment as a teacher are specified in Chapter 4, Sections 3–4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg's own appointment regulations.

The selection process will primarily consider documented qualifications in the following areas:

  • Research qualifications in English-language literary studies, which will be assessed with particular regard to the degree of originality and international anchoring,
  • Pedagogical competence in teaching and supervision in English-language literary studies relevant to the duties of the position,
  • Experience of supervision, testing and assessment in English-language literary studies, at both the Bachelor's (first cycle) and Master's (second cycle) level,
  • Very good ability to teach in English,
  • Experience in teaching academic communication,
  • Training in teaching and learning in higher education.
  • Secondly, the following qualifications will be considered:

  • Experience in teaching in subject teacher education, including experience in visiting and assessing placements (“VFU courses”),
  • Management and administration of teaching (e.g. course coordination),
  • Collaboration with the wider community,
  • Successful securing of external funding.
  • The ability to teach in English is assessed in connection with an interview and a trial lecture.

    The first choice of applicant will be the one who, after an overall assessment of skills and development potential, is deemed to have the best prerequisites for performing and developing the duties included in the position.     Knowledge of Swedish is not a requirement for the appointment, but the applicant must be prepared to take on administrative and pedagogical duties that require understanding and use of the Swedish language in both speech and writing within a couple of years.

    The position may also include other duties, such as administrative duties and development work. The holder of the position is expected to participate actively in the department's development and work environment work, such as workplace meetings and other internal meetings and conferences. The majority of the work will be conducted on site at the University of Gothenburg.
