RCSI SIM works from a €112 million educational facility in Dublin city centre. The ten-storey building, which totals more than 120,000sq ft. in size, contains a state-of-the-art surgical and clinical training suite, including a mock operating theatre and clinical training wards. It also includes a 500-seat auditorium, a library spanning three floors and a sports hall.

The RCSI SIM Innovations Lab is a hub that fosters efforts in health care systems engineering, medical device design and human factors engineering allowing health scientists, engineers and clinicians to work together to turn ideas into functioning prototypes. The RCSI SIM Innovations Lab is a critical partner in the innovation and design process providing realistic patient care settings to build the stakeholder ecosystem in which to design and test innovations from concept to prototype to pilot product.

RCSI SIM Centre, in partnership with Tympany Medical (Lead partner), NCAD, and InverMed, has successfully secured a €6.861m Disruptive Technology Innovation fund. This fund, supported by, the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment aims to bring novel technologies to the market. The Solascope project is the world's first sustainable sterile, panoramic endoscope with integrated lens cleaning delivering on circular design for medical technology. We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team and to work on this exciting project.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing some technical support across all simulation operations. This includes, but not limited to course preparation, course clean-up, maintenance and repair of human patient simulators and associated computers/software, task trainers, simulation AV system, departmental specific databases, and related multimedia peripherals. Importantly, they will be involved in the preparation and disposal of biological tissue and large specimens for specific surgical training courses. Local training and professional development in this regard will be provided.

Specifically, the duties of the post include:

Test Protocol Development :

  • Develop accurate anatomical test protocols for simulations in functional testing and human factors evaluation.
  • Support advanced focus groups and user testing onsite.
  • Design and build custom physical simulators for device testing.
  • Collaborate with project partners to align test protocols with design, manufacturing, and regulatory requirements.
  • Test Execution :

  • Conduct bench testing of medical devices, ensuring thorough execution of protocols.
  • Support third-party and internal testing, maintaining protocol adherence and test integrity.
  • Analyse test results, applying statistical methods as needed.
  • Document test results accurately, ensuring comprehensive traceability and total quality management.
  • Design & Development Support:

  • Collaborate with other project partners, providing feedback based on test outcomes.
  • Conduct risk analysis to identify, assess, control, and report design and usage risks.
  • Maintain laboratory and equipment, ensuring safety and readiness for inspections.
  • Operation and Maintenance of Simulation Technology & Training;

  • Ensure optimal operation and maintenance of simulation training, examination and skills labs.
  • Set up and verify equipment functionality before test, training and validation sessions.
  • Equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Keep an accurate inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Ensure consumables are available for teaching and evaluation events.
  • Interface with manufacturers for troubleshooting.
  • Update skills and knowledge of simulation equipment, including participating in technical training as needed.
  • Be flexible and responsive to stakeholder needs.
  • Continuous Improvement, Training, and Collaboration :

    • Present test findings clearly to stakeholders, highlighting implications for product development.

    • Maintain laboratory and equipment, ensuring safety and inspection readiness.

    • Support the academic lead with reports, presentations, and data management.

    • Embrace a collaborative approach in all tasks.

    • Be flexible with working hours to ensure effective delivery of service.

    • Promote a positive image of the Centre and RCSI at all times

    Qualifications / Skills / Attributes

    Person specifications essential :

  • Degree in Medical Device Design, Physics, Engineering, Clinical Simulation, or related fields.
  • Experience in Design Verification Testing: This includes drafting test protocols, overseeing tests, and authoring reports.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and familiarity with project management tools like MS Project or SmartSheet.
  • Experience with SolidWorks or other CAD based software.
  • Ability to convey ideas and concepts clearly at all levels.
  • Team player with a collaborative approach to achieve service goals.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong customer focus and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Person Specification Desirable :

    • Preferred industry experience in a design role.

    • Experience with 3D printing technology is a bonus

    • Familiarity with health-related learning technology/simulation, and audio- visual technology is advantageous.

  • Understanding of quality management systems and FDA design processes.
  • • Experience in handling and disposing of biological tissue is a plus.
