Veterinary Clinician in Infectious Disease

We have an exciting opportunity for a Veterinary Clinician in Infectious Disease to join our enthusiastic Infectious Diseases group in Veterinary Diagnostic Services (VDS) within the Division of Pathology, Public Health and Disease Investigation (PPHDI) in delivering a wide range of clinical and scholarly activities.

You will contribute to the delivery of an infectious diseases diagnostic service with a focus on companion animals and teaching undergraduates and postgraduates. You will also carry out associated tasks as requested by the Head of Division/Clinical Director to contribute to the School/College objectives and to achieve national and international excellence in clinical service, teaching and research.

We welcome applications from candidates who hold a Veterinary degree registerable with the RCVS and experience of veterinary clinical practice.

VDS is based within the School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Glasgow. In addition to providing an independent and supportive diagnostic service, we are involved in a range of academic activities including teaching both veterinary and veterinary bioscience students, providing postgraduate training opportunities (residencies) and supporting research studies in the University and beyond.

Veterinary Medicine has been rated 1st in the UK Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide. It has an excellent international reputation in teaching, clinical services and research and is accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), the European Association of Establishments of Veterinary Education (EAEVE) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

Job Purpose

To join our enthusiastic Infectious Diseases group in Veterinary Diagnostic Services (VDS) within the Division of Pathology, Public Health and Disease Investigation (PPHDI) in delivering a wide range of clinical and scholarly activities. This includes contributing to the delivery of an infectious diseases diagnostic service with a focus on companion animals and teaching undergraduates and postgraduates. To carry out associated tasks as requested by the Head of Division/Clinical Director to contribute to the School/College objectives and to achieve national and international excellence in clinical service, teaching and research.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical:

1. To contribute to the delivery of the Infectious Diseases service within Veterinary Diagnostic Services by providing a high quality service as detailed in client service agreements. This includes offering appropriate advice to veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses and veterinary students in the University of Glasgow and to external referring practices and research clients thereby continuing to attract the clinical diagnostic workload necessary to support the commercial, teaching and research activities of the School.

2. To assist in the development of an administrative framework to facilitate systematic, consistent reporting of infectious disease results to internal and external clients.

3. To develop the international reputation of the companion animal infectious diseases component of the veterinary diagnostic service

4. To support the training of clinical scholars (residents in infectious disease/veterinary public health), with a view to their successful completion of appropriate examinations.

5. To undertake continued personal development, in compliance with requirements of the RCVS.

Teaching:

6. To take responsibility for the organisation and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities, as directed by the Head of Division in consultation with the course and module leaders.

7. To contribute to the on-going development and design of the curriculum, in a manner that supports a research-led approach to student learning.

8. To support the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University's Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained or improved.

9. To lead and engage in the delivery of a range of assessment activities and engage fully in the examination process as appropriate, using a variety of methods and techniques, and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.

10. To actively contribute to the training programme for the Clinical Scholar (Resident in Infectious Diseases/Veterinary Public Health)

11. Delivering teaching, including CPD courses (nationally and internationally).

12. Taking responsibility for course reviews as appropriate and participating in the summative and formative assessment of students within the undergraduate curriculum.

13. Participating in undergraduate student mentoring.

Clinical Research:

14. To collaborate in clinical/diagnostic investigations and evidence based medicine of an external reputation, publishing in high quality refereed clinical/veterinary pathology journals and/or textbooks.

15. To attend and participate in national/international events/research seminars/conferences relevant to the service area.

16. To contribute to external funding applications required to under-pin the long-term growth of the field of infectious diseases, ideally from a ‘One Health' perspective.

17. To contribute to UG (summer projects) and PG student/resident supervision.

Administration:

18. To undertake Divisional and School-level administration as requested by the Head of Division/Head of School.

19. To contribute to the Performance & Development Review process as appropriate and in accordance with University strategy.

Engagement:

20. To participate in promotional activities and events related to Veterinary Diagnostic Services and Division of Pathology, Public Health & Disease Investigation.

21. To develop new ideas and participate in the delivery of continuing professional development (CPD) for practitioners or researchers in the UK and overseas.

22. To contribute to the enhancement of the University's international profile in line with the Strategic Plan, World Changers Together

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Veterinary degree registerable with the RCVS.

For Appointment at Grade 8:

A2 PhD in a relevant subject and professional certification in clinical pathology (e.g. FRCPath), infectious disease (e.g. DACVM) or small animal internal medicine (e.g. ECVIM).

Desirable:

B1 Postgraduate research qualification in a related area or evidence of research training.

B2 Eligibility to sit the qualifying examination for a specialist postgraduate veterinary infectious diseases qualification (i.e. Diploma of the American College of Infectious Diseases, or Royal College of Pathologists) within 1 year of appointment.

B3 A good track record of development and delivery of teaching.

B4 Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

Experience

Essential

E1 Experience of veterinary clinical practice.

For Appointment at Grade 8:

E2 Experience of clinical work in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory.

Desirable

F1 Evidence of conducting and publishing research.

F2 Evidence of involvement in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7/8, £39,347 - £44,263/ £48,350 - £56,021 per annum pro rata.

This post is part time, 14 hours per week to cover maternity leave for up to 12 months or until the substantive postholder returns.
