Veterinary Clinician (Production Animal Health)

Job Purpose

To support the teaching of clinical skills to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the areas of production animal health (PAH). To contribute to the School/College objectives to achieve national/ international excellence in veterinary education.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching:

1. To support academic and clinical staff in the delivery of skills-based training in PAH through the clinical teaching undertaken in the Galloway Building (Veterinary School), on-farm and through tutorials and seminars.

2. To participate in the development of new:

a. On-line resources for undergraduate veterinary education.

b. Modules for the clinical phase of the BVMS curriculum.

c. Resources for assessment (formative and summative).

d. Linkages with veterinary practices and food business operators that will lead to innovative partnerships for improved veterinary education.

e. Components in the contribution of delivery of CPD.

3. To participate in the planning, organisation and implementation of teaching and assessment exercises for undergraduate veterinary students.

4. To support the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University's Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained or improved.

5. To contribute to the ongoing development and design of the undergraduate curriculum.

6. To assist students with difficulties.

Clinical:

7. To participate in the clinics rota and after hours service for clinical cases, routine herd visits and problem investigation herd visits held in the SCPAHFS and the first opinion services to the University farm and a small number of commercial farms.

8. To contribute to clinical and/or clinical research activities of the School of Veterinary Medicine:

•by taking responsibilities for patients in conjunction with others in a way that ensures a high-level clinical service is delivered.

•by supervising other staff, including support staff, as required.

•by maintaining and developing clinical skills that are appropriate to generate personal credibility in the teaching of “day one” clinical skills.

Administration:

9. To participate in promotional activities and events relating to SCPAHFS.

10. To undertake administrative duties as requested by the Head of School, Head of Division or delegate.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential

A1 Veterinary degree recognised by the RCVS.

Desirable

B1 Certificate or Diploma in a relevant discipline (RCVS, European or American) or eligibility to take qualifying examination.

B2 A track record of development and delivery of teaching.

Skills

Essential

C1 Excellent communication skills, both orally and written.

C2 Must have held a full, valid UK driving licence for 2 years. Special rules apply for drivers from outside the UK, please seek advice before applying.

C3 Enthusiasm for teaching and learning.

C4 Excellent interpersonal skills and presentation skills.

C5 Time, project and people management skills.

C6 Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

C7 Ability to work with little supervision.

C8 Self-motivated, able to plan for contingencies and think strategically.

C9 Ability to accept collegiate responsibilities and act accordingly.

Desirable

D1 Understanding and experience of databases and other IT applications/packages.

Experience

Essential

E1 Substantial experience of working in either:

a) production animal veterinary practice, or

b) livestock farms, or

c) veterinary or agricultural institute of further or higher education

Desirable

F1 A track record of development and delivery of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

F2 Experience of research and record of research publication.

F3 Experience of work in a veterinary educational institution.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 8, £49,250 - £56,921 per annum.

This post is full time and to cover maternity leave for up to 12 months or until the substantive postholder returns.
