35 hours/week Monday to Friday. Staff are required to work some evening and weekend hours to accommodate working clients' schedules. This position is based in Burnaby however staff are required to travel to other sites in Surrey, Coquitlam, New Westminster or to external meetings from time to time.

The Role

The Workplace Communication / Career Coach contributes to the success of Douglas College and its community of learners. They are primarily responsible, as part of the Career Paths for Skilled Immigrants' team, to provide individualized employment assistance and workplace communication strategies through case management and group workshops. With improved workplace communication skills, participants will be better able to find, keep and progress at work in their field of expertise.

The intent of the Career Paths for Skilled Immigrants initiative is to improve employment outcomes for Skilled Immigrants in BC by leveraging their pre- arrival skills and qualifications which thereby contributes to higher earnings and facilitates progress towards re-credentialing where appropriate. This, in turn, benefits the BC labour market.

The Communication / Career Coach will provide 1-1 coaching and employment- focused communication workshops to internationally educated post-secondary educators, community social services or ECE teachers who are enrolled with the Career Paths for Skilled Immigrants program at Douglas College. The goal is to provide extensive practice so that clients gain confidence in their communication skills to look for, find and maintain employment in their professional field.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct client marketing, recruitment and pre-screening in coordination with Career Coach;
  • Meet with and conduct needs assessment to determine individual client learning needs specific to their goal occupation as per targeted NOC codes;
  • Prepare student-centred learning activities and assignments for 1-1 and group settings both face to face and online (Zoom, BlackBoard, MS Teams);
  • Deliver interactive workshops that are occupational specific and designed to provide workplace communication practice and feedback;
  • Provide ongoing resume/cover letter support, interview practice and scenario-based activities to introduce clients to occupationally focused situations they will encounter pre and post-employment;
  • Meet 1-1 and provide case management services to clients as needed;
  • Provide individual feedback;
  • Ensure that students complete and follow up on assignments and activities;
  • Report and track participant outcomes and activities with accuracy;
  • Coordinate, as part of the full team, guest speakers and employer activities;
  • Establish priorities, set and meet deadlines;
  • Adapt to constantly changing requirements and work well under pressure;
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with colleagues, program participants, community service providers and employers.
  • To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline;
  • Evidence of 3 to 5 years' experience in employment services with a focus on workplace communication for skilled immigrants;
  • Experience delivering topics on Canadian workplace culture and career management practices using your current labour market knowledge across a range of industry sectors;
  • Knowledge creating and teaching in an online environment. E.g. Zoom, Blackboard;
  • Knowledge or training in Skills for Success (Essential Skills);
  • Proven ability to work independently using effective organizational skills;
  • Advanced proficiency in internet research, Microsoft Office, and social media;
  • Excellent team player with ability to calmly handle changing circumstances;
  • Ability to adjust to a flexible schedule.
  • Member of BC TEAL and BCCDA an asset;
