About Canterbury Christ Church University

Affiliated to the Church of England, Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) is a highly-ranked public institution of higher education in Kent's historic city of Canterbury, England. The institution was originally set up as the Canterbury Christ Church College in 1962 to provide comprehensive teacher training. In 1995, the Privy Council granted it the degree-granting powers and hence the name Canterbury Christ Church University College. It was in the year 2005 that CCCU obtained the university status under its current name. In 2009, the Privy Council conferred CCCU the authority to award research degrees. The university has associations with MillionPlus, Cathedrals Group and the Universities at Medway.

CCCU has its main campus in a beautiful setting at North Holmes in Canterbury and several other sites around the city. It also extends several programs at its campuses in Medway and Tunbridge Wells. The main source of information for research, teaching, and learning on the campus is the university library that holds a collection of rare and unique printed and digital resources. The university has partnerships with various transport companies and schemes that offer discounts to students and staff on travel. Other on-campus facilities include a chaplaincy, health center, and an online shop.

Sports Centre boasts of top-rated health and fitness facilities like an exercise studio, a climbing wall, gym, and sports hall. St. George's Centre houses a 200-seat housing facility, bars and offices of the students' union. There are several food outlets on the campus where students can enjoy tasty and healthy food and beverages. The union runs more than 100 student clubs and societies related to academics as well as focuses on various recreational, athletic, cultural and political interests of the students. Additionally, the university has a student-run Community and Student Radio Station as well as a news publication named Unified. The university has four academic facilities, each comprising several schools and learning centers focused on different areas of study.

CCCU offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in many subject areas including teacher education, health and medicine, digital and creative arts, humanities, social and applied sciences, and technology and engineering. The students and graduates connect with industries, businesses and professionals in both the public and private spheres. At present, the university has about 15,300 students, out of which 75% of the students are pursuing degrees full-time and 25% part-time. It has 1,700 staff members on the roll, more than half of them being females.

CCCU has a comprehensive list of alumni, which includes the names of highly-successful and renowned personalities. The university has produced many popular names like Robert Anthony Beckett (Stand-Up Comedian and TV Presenter), Geraldine McCaughrean (Children's Author), Phil Gallagher (TV Presenter), Jon Holmes (Writer, Presenter, and Comedian), Kate Blewett (Filmmaker), Dorothée Munyaneza (Singer, Dancer, and Actor), Kate Blewett (Award-Winning Documentary Filmmaker) and Joel Hopkins (Screenwriter and Film Director). Many other graduates of CCCU have gained a lot of recognition for their contribution in respective professional fields.

The University received a prestigious silver rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework, exceeding national quality requirements for UK universities. Nearly 90% of the research submitted to the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) was assessed as world-leading, internationally excellent, or internationally recognized. Top 20 in the UK for Qualified Teaching Staff. 79% of our academic staff hold a teaching qualification in addition to their academic and professional qualifications (HESA 2017/18)

Over 1,200 of students regularly compete in a variety of sports with other universities and our Sports Scholarships scheme supports around 40 talented young athletes every year, including a world record-holder and several international competitors. The University is the main sponsor of the Kent Women’s Cricket team and has partnerships with a range of local and regional clubs and organizations, including Polo Farm Sports Club in Canterbury
