About De Montfort University Leicester

De Montfort University, popularly known as DMU, is a public university in the city of Leicester, England. Originally founded as the Leicester School of Art in 1870, the university has evolved through many incarnations including the Leicester Colleges of Art and Technology and Leicester Polytechnic. The university adapted according to the changing times and kept on adding new subjects, such as engineering, building, and machine drawing.

In 1992, the university came to be known as De Montfort University. The name of the university was borrowed from Simon de Montfort, who is known to be a 13th-century Earl of Leicester, credited with the task of establishing the first parliament in 1265.

The university campus comprises numerous buildings, including Campus Centre Building, Kimberlin Library, Queen's Building which houses the faculty of technology, Hawthorn Building which includes DMU Heritage Centre and Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. There are also other buildings like the Trinity House which comprises the Vice-Chancellor's office, Chantry Building, Great Hall of Leicester Castle which comprises business school and Gateway House. Additionally, the campus houses Hugh Aston Building which has the faculty of business and law, Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Centre, The Venue which comprises skating rink, movie hall, and Vijay Patel Building which comprises arts, design and humanities school.

This university has specialized faculties for all types of streams such as Faculty of Art, Design and Humanities, Faculty of Business and Law, Faculty of Health and Life Sciences and Faculty of Computing, Engineering, and Media. It offers more than 100 undergraduate courses, and over 70 Master's programs in the areas of business, law, art, design, humanities, media, engineering, energy, computing, sciences, and social sciences. Each year more than 2,700 international students from more than 130 countries choose to study with the university.

De Montfort University also has globally popular research institutes like Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility, Centre for Reproduction Research, Centre for Urban Research and Austerity, Cinema and Television History Research Institute, Cyber Technology Institute. Other centers include Finance and Banking Research Centre, Institute for Applied Economics and Social Value, Institute for Evidence-based Law Reform, Institute for Psychological Sciences, Institute for Research in Criminology, Community, Education, and Social Justice, Institute of Allied Health Sciences Research and Institute of Architecture. DMUsport offers more than 30 sports clubs from basketball and boxing to Jiu-Jitsu, football, triathlon, and snow sports.

This university has notable alumni in different sectors, such as novelist Louis de Bernières in the field of academics, famous Omani entrepreneur Qais Al Khonji in the field of business, Miss England 2008 and model Laura Coleman in the area of fashion and many more alumni in sectors such as health, medicine, media, law and order, sports, politics, and government.
