About Birmingham City University

Based in the Birmingham region of England, Birmingham City University is one of the most diverse places to study. Looking back at its history, it can be seen that five different colleges were merged in 1971 to form The City of Birmingham Polytechnic. These five colleges were Birmingham College of Art, Birmingham School of Music, Birmingham College of Commerce, South Birmingham Technical College, and North Birmingham Technical College. In the year 1975, City of Birmingham College of Education, Bordesley College of Education, and Anstey College of Physical Education became a part of the polytechnic. In the year 1988, Bournville College of Art and the Faculty of Art and Design merged to form the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design.

Owing to the Further and Higher Education Act in 1992, all polytechnics were permitted to take on the title of 'university'. On June 16, 1992, the Privy Council gave its approval for the new name i.e. 'The University of Central England in Birmingham'. Three years later, the Birmingham School of Jewellery was established. In the year 2007, the university not only changed its name to Birmingham City University but also made changes to its logo. In 2011, the City Centre Campus was extended as major work commenced at the Parkside Building. This campus started enrolment of students from the year 2013.
