Newcastle University dates back to the establishment of the School of Medicine and Surgery in 1834 and Armstrong College in 1871. In 1937, these two were combined to form King's College. King's College was renamed the University of Newcastle in 1963. More than half of the degrees offered by the university are professionally accredited by prestigious organizations like Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AASCB), EFMD Quality Improvement System (EQUIS), and Association of MBAs (AMBA). Currently, the university has three faculties: Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Faculty of Science, Agriculture, and Engineering, and Faculty of Medical Sciences.
Located in the middle of the city of Newcastle, the university campus is spread across an area of 50 acres. The campus houses a well-stocked library and the Centre for Physical Recreation and Sport. Campus for Ageing and Vitality carry out first-rate research into aging. Newcastle University Business School is situated near the St. James' Park. The building of Newcastle Helix Urban Sciences is home to the School of Computing. It is the first UK university to establish a fully owned international campus for medicine at its NUMed Campus in Malaysia which opened in 2011.
