Generally called RGU, Robert Gordon University is an open university. It was originated from an educational institution founded in the 18th century by Robert Gordon. The educational establishment received its university status in 1992. It is one of two institutions of higher education in Aberdeen, Scotland.
Nestled in the south-west of the city, The Garthdee Campus sits in a wonderfully spacious parkland, adjacent to the River Dee. All the academic departments of the university are set within this campus. The campus is home to teaching and research activities and is recognized for its contemporary architecture. The university is divided into 11 schools. Each school has a head to supervise and is sub-divided into educational departments.
Apart from academic sections, the university has numerous administrative departments too which support academic and cultural activities. Presently, the university has more than 16,000 students. Out of this, around 11,000 students applied for undergraduate programs and around 5,000 students for postgraduate courses. The university provides many programs from BSc to Ph.D. in various fields of study, including technology, arts, health care, and business. Other than this, the university offers distance learning services through its virtual learning capabilities. In addition to this, the university staff members help students to produce outstanding research work.
The university has a students' union that helps the student community and works to enhance the experience of students at the university. The sports department at the campus provides a range of fitness and sports services to students and the general public. The University's design & print consultancy, The Gatehouse provides all design and print-related functions to academic and support departments as well as student and commercial enterprise.
The university has a good reputation when it comes to providing job opportunities for students. Also, it is rated high amongst the universities of the country when it comes to providing employment to graduates or students continuing postgraduation study six months after leaving the university. Also, it maintains a huge alumni network in and around the country. Some of the prominent alumni include Gordon Duthie (musician, singer, and songwriter), Maxwell Hutchinson (broadcaster, architect, and guitarist), Ola Gorie (jewelry designer), Eilidh Middleton (equestrian competitor), Hannah Miley (Olympian and swimmer), Frank Chapman (Businessman) and Titi Horsfall (author).
