About University of Sheffield

Established in 1897, the University of Sheffield is an open research university and part of the Sheffield Medical School, Firth College, and Sheffield Technical School. The university majorly focuses on the technical field and science. Also, the university is amongst the six red bricks universities that were founded and constructed in the industrial area of England. The classes began with a batch of 114 students, and later on, the number of enrolments increased up to 1,000 students. The university has rapidly emerged over the years. Considering the growing number of enrolments, the university developed new departments, residential halls, faculty buildings, and also expanded the area of the campus.

The campus comprises of many buildings along with various faculties and departments. The Octagon center was constructed in 1983 near the campus. It is known to be a center for conferences and music venues. The Department of Plant Sciences and Biology, a museum, Arts tower are all located within the campus. Moreover, the Western Bank Library is known to have a huge collection of books and research papers. Around 25,000 rare books and over 150 special collections can be found in the library.

In addition, the Faculty of Engineering was opened in 2015. It includes laboratories, theatre lectures, and classrooms for workshops. Also, the St. George church was built on the campus, and it was the first campus to have a church. Later on, it was changed into a lecture theatre in 1994. The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs. The academic structure is known to have a huge list of courses that are divided into various departments and faculties. The subjects are categorized into five faculties, namely the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Medicine and Health. In addition, the curriculum involves an international faculty known as City College which is located in Greece. The Manufacturing Research Centre of the university operates in partnership with Boeing. It conducts projects funded by BAE systems.

The University of Sheffield has many notable alumni, such as Lee Child (Renowned Author), David Blunkett (Former Home Secretary), George Porter (Nobel Prize in Chemistry), Harry Kroto (Contributed in the discovery of fullerenes), and Jessica Ennis (Gold Medallist at Olympics).
