Founded in the year 1974, the University of the Fraser Valley is a government university offering degree programs in various disciplines, including accounting, education, business technology, and aviation. The university offers two master's and 19 undergraduate degree programs, as well as over 110 online courses. On April 21, 2008, the university successfully received the official university status. Presently, the university has five faculties, one graduate school and one college of arts. As the university started to grow, in the year 2009, it established the Centre for Social Research and the Global Development Institute. Furthermore, in 2010, various new graduate certificate programs were introduced by the university.
The University of the Fraser Valley has campuses in several locations throughout Canada, and it also has an international campus in Chandigarh, India. The university's main campus is the Abbotsford campus, and it features several student-friendly facilities such as a library, office spaces, a cafeteria, a residential area, a bookstore, and sports and student centers. The second campus is the Chilliwack campus, which is located in Canada Education Park. The campus has a dental clinic, nursing station, theatre and performance lab. The Mission Campus at Heritage Park Centre also offers educational programs in graphic and digital design.
The university also has other main centers situated in different places, namely The Aerospace Centre, The Agriculture Centre, The Hope Centre, and the Trades and Technology Centre. In 2006, the international campus in Chandigarh, India, opened. It enables students to start their education in India while allowing them to finish their degree programs on the Canadian campus. In the academic year 2017-2018, the university awarded 1,038 bachelor’s degrees and the total credentials granted were 2,604. In the same year, the student enrolment was 14,849, of which 57% were female. The average class size at the University of the Fraser Valley is 25 students. Additionally, the university welcomes international students in large numbers every year, and in 2017, the international student enrolment was 1,708. These demographics represented 64 different countries across the world. In the same year, the academic staff was 722 and the administrative staff was 699.
The University of the Fraser Valley is home to many notable alumni who are pioneering in their respective fields. The university has approximately 36,500 alumni around the globe. Some of them include chief strategist and co-founder of Skyrocket Mo Dhaliwal, author Seamus Heffernan, marketing assistant Deniz Petekkaya and Liz Harris.
