Assistant Lecturers - PHAIS

Job description

 ***Internal Applicants Only***

The School of Philosophical, Historical, and Interdisciplinary Studies hopes to appoint several Assistant Lecturers (ALs) for the 2026-27 academic year. The persons appointed will be required to teach undergraduate students, to undertake marking of coursework assignments, examination marking where applicable, and related administrative work.

Purpose of the role

Assistant Lecturers support academic staff at the University by performing teaching or teaching related duties in line with business need and affordability.  This post also provides a development opportunity for postgraduate students to develop their teaching skills in preparation for more senior teaching posts in future and to achieve professional recognition.

Teaching should normally be undergraduate class teaching/seminars or demonstrating, using existing teaching materials.  Lecturing duties, and any delivery of teaching at Masters level, would not usually be undertaken by graduate teachers and must be associated with a student's research interest, and require prior approval from the Deputy Dean (Education) of the relevant Faculty in which the teaching will be conducted.  Lecturing duties should be as directed by and under the supervision of the module supervisor.  Marking should be undertaken in line with the Marking Policy and with permission from the Deputy Dean (Education), on the basis of a case made by the Head of School/Department.

Assistant Lecturers will receive close supervision and direction from the module supervisor, including regular feedback, pastoral support and guidance.  The module supervisor will give full background on the module and clear direction on the content to be taught and the preparation necessary, and will undertake assessment of teaching.

Modules that ALs may be invited to teach include:

Module number

Module name

HR172-4-AU

War and the Twentieth-Century World: Experiences, Representations, and Legacies

HR176-4-SP

Revolutions in History, 1776-1919: How to Change the World

IA214-3-FY (Spring term only)

Ways of Reading

*Please note that the number of available classes/posts is subject to change and will also be based on student enrolment numbers.

Main Duties

  1. Teaching classes to students, providing them with a thorough knowledge of the subject and enabling them to meet the learning outcomes.
  2. Session preparation as requested by module lead.
  3. Attending the lecture associated with the class.
  4. Use of Moodle tests (Assistant Lecturers would not usually develop material for Moodle)
  5. Marking exam papers, including use of FASER.
  6. Marking coursework assignments, including use of FASER.
  7. Demonstration of practical skills.
  8. Undertaking related administrative duties.
  9. Attending training courses and briefing meetings.

A full list of duties can be found in the job pack

Essential Requirements

Applicants for posts as an Assistant Lecturer must be registered for a postgraduate degree at the University of Essex during all or part of the academic year 2026-27. The School does not usually employ students in their first year of study as Assistant Lecturers. Additionally, students entering further completion will not be eligible for appointment.

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant subject area
  • Studying for a PhD in a relevant area but not in further completion.
  • Good knowledge of the subject area being taught.
  • Willing to undertake training to the requirements of the post.

Full list of requirements can be found in the job pack

Contractual Arrangements

The total number of hours per week is determined by the number of sessions undertaken by the Assistant Lecturer.

The appointment will be made at the University rates for Assistant Lecturers, depending on hours agreed, at Grade 7 SP 27 (currently £18.97 per hour) or at Grade 7 SP 28 (currently £19.52 per hour) for those who hold CADENZA.

The posts will be offered as fixed-term employment contracts until the post holder completes or withdraws from postgraduate studies or enters further completion or an extension to completion period.

Although an overarching contract will be in place for the duration of postgraduate studies, ALs will need to apply for individual posts and will have no entitlement to future engagements beyond their initial post. The reason the contract is fixed-term is that these posts provide an opportunity for postgraduate research students to develop interpersonal, communication and practical skills.

Support, Mentoring and Monitoring

Assistant Lecturers must engage in professional development activity related to teaching, learning and assessment responsibilities.  All ALs are expected to achieve Associate Fellowship (D1) of the HEA (through CADENZA) at the first possible opportunity and by the end of their first year of teaching (or they will not normally be able to continue teaching).  Assistant Lecturers will be paid for all mandatory training.  The following training should be undertaken:

  • Attendance at the central induction event (September and/or January) (12 hours)
  • ‘How we work at Essex’ mandatory online training (3 hours)
  • Complete the CADENZA application (6 hours).

In addition, there will be the following Departmental induction and training.

  • PHAIS briefing (1 hour)
  • Teaching and marking sessions (2 x 1 hour)

Assistant Lecturers are also expected to play a wider citizenship role in the Department.  This will include activities including where appropriate involvement in module development and review and being represented at Departmental meetings.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via email to Hannah Whiting, PHAIS School Manager, at [email protected]. The deadline for applications is midnight Sunday 27 September 2026.

Applications should include:

  • A covering letter, no more than 1000 words, explaining how you meet the essential (and desirable) skills, attributes and experience required of the post-holder;
  • An up to date Curriculum Vitae/résumé;
  • A brief statement of your academic interests - you may state any modules that you would prefer to teach, however please note that it is not always possible to place students with their preferred choice;
  • An up to date reference provided by your PhD supervisor on the attached form. Please note that it is your responsibility to make sure that your referee sends their reference by the closing date. All offers of AL work are subject to the approval of the PhD Supervisor.

Selection Procedure
Selection of ALs and decisions about teaching allocations will be made by the AL Selection Committee.
All new applicants who are short-listed will be called for a brief interview and will be required to supply the name of a referee. The interview will be conducted by two or three people - usually the AL Co-ordinator and one or two other members of staff.
Interviews will not normally be necessary for those short-listed candidates who have already taught in the School and whose teaching has been monitored.
Interviews For HR172 are likely to be held Wednesday 30 September. Successful applicants will need to available to bring their right to work documents to campus as soon as possible after this time. A delay in doing so will mean contracts cannot be produced in time for the start of term. Interviews for HR176 and IA214 will follow later in the term and applicants will be notified in due course.
