Department/Museum Faculty of Science

University of Copenhagen

The assistant professor will work in the field of quantum chemistry on quantum computers focusing on the development of quantum response theory algorithms for noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) computers, future fault-tolerant quantum computers, and the identification of use cases from chemistry. A thorough understanding of correlated wave function quantum chemistry and quantum computing is essential, so the candidate should have a documented track record of the implementation of quantum linear response theory (qLR or qEOM) based on coupled cluster and multi-configurational self-consistent field (MCSCF) wave functions. The candidate should have a deep understanding of gate-based quantum computing, such as chemistry-inspired quantum ansatzes, e.g., ADAPT, unitary product state, unitary coupled cluster. Documented experience with the calculation of magnetic properties of molecules, such as electron paramagnetic resonance and nuclear magnetic resonance parameters, and of molecule-light interaction properties is required. Significant research experience in quantum chemistry and quantum computing is also required. Parts of the project will involve the development of Python based software, and a strong background in Python will therefore be advantageous. Proficiency in communication and teamwork skills, as well as excellent English skills, both written and spoken, are essential.

The assistant professor's duties will primarily include research partly in collaboration with external collaborators from industry, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations within Quantum Chemistry and Quantum Computing and dissemination. To a limited extent this may also include performance of other duties.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, internationally competitive research. The ability to attract external funding will be considered together with outreach qualifications. Teaching qualifications are not mandatory but documented teaching qualifications and teaching experience will be considered.

Six overall criteria apply for assistant professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Furthermore, each candidate must be assessed according to the specific requirements stated in the job advertisement.
