Summary: The building automation specialist designs, programs, commissions, and supports building automation systems that monitor and control mechanical building systems across the university campus. This position contributes specialized technical expertise in controls design, system integration, programming, commissioning, and lifecycle optimization of building automation infrastructure. Working collaboratively with project managers, consultants, contractors, and internal stakeholders, the specialist develops reliable and sustainable controls solutions that support occupant comfort, operational effectiveness, energy management, and campus sustainability objectives. This role influences projects with university-wide impact and provides advanced technical guidance related to automation systems, networks, and controls strategies. Duties and Responsibilities: Designs building automation and control systems for new construction, renovation, and infrastructure renewal projects, developing control strategies, system architecture, and technical solutions that support operational performance, occupant comfort, and energy management objectives. Develops control sequences, programs automation systems, configures databases, and creates graphical user interfaces that facilitate effective monitoring, operation, and optimization of building systems. Provides technical leadership throughout project planning, implementation, startup, and commissioning activities. Estimates project costs related to controls equipment, internal labour, and contractor services, monitors expenditures, and recommends actions to address cost variances and emerging issues. Addresses complex technical requirements and challenges in collaboration with project managers, consultants, contractors, and operational stakeholders. Reviews consultant designs, specifications, and sequences of operation, recommending modifications that align with university standards, operational requirements, and long-term sustainability objectives. Coordinates and participates in commissioning activities, validating system performance, optimizing building operations, and resolving deficiencies identified during project implementation and occupancy. Produces AutoCAD drawings, technical documentation, and related materials that communicate design intent and support project execution, operations, and maintenance activities. Investigates and resolves complex building automation, controls, networking, and system integration issues, providing expert technical guidance to maintenance personnel and other stakeholders. Evaluates automation technologies, controls equipment, and system enhancements using operational, lifecycle, reliability, and cost considerations, recommending solutions that maximize long-term value and system performance. Delivers technical training, knowledge transfer, and consultation to colleagues and stakeholders to strengthen the operation and maintenance of building automation systems. Maintains current knowledge of building automation technologies, industry standards, codes, and regulatory requirements, incorporating leading practices into system design, programming, and operational support activities. Advances campus sustainability initiatives through automation system design, operation, and continuous improvement activities. Communicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environment. Advanced knowledge of building automation systems, controls architecture, and control strategies. Advanced knowledge of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), electrical, mechanical, and refrigeration systems. Knowledge of university policies, planning processes, and sustainability principles is an asset. Strong understanding of computer systems, networking principles, and communication protocols. Ability to analyze complex technical issues and develop practical solutions. Effective communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts for varied audiences. Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities. Strong relationship building and stakeholder engagement skills. Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a team. Proficiency in automation programming, database configuration, graphics development, and systems integration. Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications and project management software; experience with AutoCAD and technical drawing development.
