Employment Opportunities for Fixed-Term Employment Opportunities

Monash is committed to the creation of pathways to more secure fixed-term and continuing employment, where this is appropriate for the individual situation and work category. In line with this commitment, the Faculty of Engineering is seeking expressions of interest from existing sessional staff for fixed-term positions across the following employment categories:

PhD Teaching Fellow employment is for current Monash PhD students who are fulfilling and maintaining the conditions of their doctoral enrolment. It may be offered on a part-time basis for a minimum of 12 months and does not extend beyond the end of the academic year in which the individual's estimated PhD completion date falls. PhD Teaching Fellow employment is an alternative to sessional employment and provides Monash PhD students with practical work experience, professional development, training opportunities and the opportunity for career progression.

PhD Teaching Fellow employment is fixed-term and part-time and will initially be offered for a minimum of 0.1 FTE to a maximum of 0.2 FTE. The fraction can be adjusted through a change of fraction form for a teaching period up to a maximum of 0.6 FTE throughout the duration of the engagement. Additional casual/sessional appointment considerations for the above Employment categories

When expressing interest in or applying for either of the above employment opportunities, please note that any current sessional or casual activities assigned to you must cease from the day you commence your appointment with the University.

The exception to this is that you can undertake professional work under an additional casual appointment as Exam Staff, specifically in roles such as Exam Invigilation or Exam IT Support.

What are the benefits?

Staff engaged into the above employment types will have access to:

  • entitlement to paid leave (including including taking annual or long service leave during non-work periods for Continuing (Defined Periods) Employment);
  • university holidays on paid working days;
  • 17% employer superannuation contributions; and
  • eligibility for annual salary incremental increases.

What should I include in my application?

Your application should include:

  • a copy of your current CV; and
  • a Cover Letter outlining your preferred alignment with courses or units, preferred fortnightly teaching hours and alignment with the faculty areas of teaching; and
  • If applying for a PhD Teaching Fellow position, a copy of your PhD Confirmation of Enrolment, and PhD Research Enrolment Summary

How will applications be assessed?

The University is committed to an open, merit-based approach to this recruitment activity. Faculty-specific Selection Committees will be convened to assess applications and determine appointment suitability.
