Nursing Academic Success Coordinator
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
The Nursing Academic Success Coordinator is a professional academic-support staff member within the Office of Academic Success who provides specialized academic support to pre-nursing and nursing students. The position combines subject-area expertise with evidence-based tutoring, academic coaching, learning strategies, and assessment preparation to help students successfully navigate their coursework/labs and prepare for progression through their academic program and, ultimately, professional licensure examinations.
The position works collaboratively with faculty and nursing program leadership to support student success while maintaining clear distinctions between academic support and faculty responsibilities for course instruction, curriculum, assessment, grading, and academic progression decisions. The student population served includes all pre-nursing and nursing students in the undergraduate and vocational nursing programs: Vocational Nursing, Associate Degree in Nursing, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provides individual and small-group tutoring to pre-nursing and nursing students in nursing related coursework/labs.
- Maintains regular tutoring hours and provides targeted academic support to students referred by faculty or identified through established student-success processes.
- Develops and facilitates nursing-focused study sessions, workshops, review sessions, and other academic-support programming.
- Helps students develop effective study habits, time-management skills, test-taking strategies, and approaches to learning and retaining complex nursing content.
- Provides academic support for standardized nursing assessments and NCLEX-style examinations, including question analysis, clinical reasoning, prioritization, and test-taking strategies.
- Provides academic coaching and helps students develop individualized study and success plans based on their academic needs.
- Recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises nursing peer tutors and coordinates nursing tutoring.
- Maintains appropriate records of attendance to tutoring, coaching, workshops, and other academic-support activities.
- Refers students to appropriate campus resources, including advising, accessibility services, tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, the Writing Center, Career Services, and other Academic Excellence programs.
- Maintains current knowledge of nursing subject matter, evidence-based learning strategies, and current NCLEX-RN and Next Generation NCLEX testing frameworks.
- This position may require teaching.
- Performs other duties related to academic support and student success as assigned.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
- Current, unencumbered Texas or compact Registered Nurse (RN) license required
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) required; master’s degree in nursing, education, or a related field preferred.
- Nursing practice experience sufficient to provide subject-area expertise to pre-nursing and nursing students.
- Experience providing tutoring, academic support, teaching, mentoring, or related student-support services preferred.
- Familiarity with nursing education, standardized nursing assessments, and NCLEX-RN/Next Generation NCLEX testing preferred.
- Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS/CPR required; ACLS and/or PALS preferred.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with faculty and staff.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and common educational technology. .
