Position Purpose In support of Dartmouth Libraries work to spark discovery, the Reference and Administration Specialist supports inquiry about and access to special collections and archival materials. Under the supervision of the Special Collections Librarian for Teaching and Scholarly Engagement, provides both on-site and remote reference services relating to special collections materials, monitors the Special Collections Reading Room, assists users with the handling of materials, and provides administrative support for operations of Rauner Special Collections Library.
This is a hybrid work location eligible position.
Description
Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp Bachelors or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • 3 plus years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a public service environment
  • Experience working in a library or other cultural heritage institution
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work discreetly with sensitive of confidential materials
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with rare or fragile materials
  • Advanced degree in library science or a humanities field

Key Accountabilities
Description Responsible for managing incoming e-mail reference questions including responding directly or forwarding to other staff members for response.
Percentage Of Time 35%
Description Manages and coordinates the day-to-day administrative operations of Rauner Special Collections Library and independently handles a variety of questions, some of which are confidential or sensitive in nature.
Percentage Of Time 20%
Description Provides reference service and referrals as appropriate in the Special Collections reading room on a regular basis to a diverse community of users, with a primary focus on the research and instructional needs of the Dartmouth community.
Percentage Of Time 20%
Description Supervises student assistants responsible for digitization and reference support.
Percentage Of Time 5%
Description Under the guidance of the Special Collections Librarian for Teaching and Scholarly Engagement, routinely reviews and proposes updates to public services policies and procedures based on observed trends in in-person and off-site patron interactions and evolving technology capabilities.

Description Participates in outreach efforts related to the collections including social media posts, exhibits, teaching, and public events.
Percentage Of Time 5%
Description Maintains and compiles statistics of use of collections and suggests changes in services based on analysis of statistical data.

Description Stays current on emerging trends and practices in special collections public services.
