We are a globally recognised university focused on providing high-quality teaching and delivering impactful research and an excellent student experience. Our vision is simple: “shape tomorrow through our unique blend of the modern and the traditional, by embracing diversity, seeking out the new, and excelling in education and research.”   Our people are at the heart of the University - our excellence in teaching, research and knowledge exchange depends on the engagement, capability and wellbeing of our people. We strive to create and encourage an environment where people have the opportunity to develop, progress and thrive.   In acknowledgment of our commitment to gender equality and progression, we proudly hold the Athena SWAN Bronze Award and a Race Equality Charter Bronze Award, a testament to our unwavering dedication to creating an inclusive and equitable environment for all. Join us at Oxford Brookes University, where every step forward is a leap toward a brighter tomorrow.   The role     We are recruiting Specialist Mentors (Mental Health) to provide one-to-one support to students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels of study. We will consider candidates available to work between 15 and 37 hours per week during semester time (30 weeks per year). Some overtime outside of semester may be available.   About the team   Operating primarily during semesters, Specialist Mentors (Mental Health) deliver tailored one-to-one support to students, largely funded through Disabled Students’ Allowance. Team members hold high-level qualifications and actively maintain their professional body memberships and continuing professional development in accordance with the DfE NMH Mandatory Qualifications. To offer cohesive, integrated support, the teams collaborate closely with Advisers and colleagues across Inclusive Support as well as the broader Student Support Services department.   What will I be doing?
  • Provide professional specialist mentoring for individual students with mental health difficulties and neurodivergent conditions.
  • Conduct initial assessment of students (including risk assessment in relation to complex mental health needs).
  • Select approaches relevant to the individual's needs and/or refer to other services where appropriate.
  • Manage a caseload of work with a range of students, including students from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Adhere to timescales, reporting procedures and record-keeping requirements of the DfE Membership Standards for NMH Providers.
What skills do I need?
  • An undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Qualification, training and professional membership as required by the DSA Membership Standards for NMH Providers.
  • Experience of providing one-to-one support to individuals with mental health difficulties.
  • Substantial experience of working within a related field.
This role will not attract sufficient points to obtain a sponsored Skilled Worker visa under the points-based immigration system, however applications are welcome from candidates who don’t currently have the right to work in the UK, but who would be eligible to obtain a visa via another route.   Please note: the successful applicant will need to be subject to a background disclosure check by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) before any appointment can be confirmed.   About the location    The post holder will work in a hybrid pattern both remotely and on-site. Staff work at least one day per week on campus, two days if they work three days or more. They will mainly be based on the Headington campus but may need to travel to other campuses.   Benefits    As an Oxford Brookes employee, you will enjoy a total of a minimum of 25 days holiday, rising with your service, plus 8 bank holidays and additional university concessionary days (normally 5 per year). Part-time employees receive annual leave, bank holidays and concessionary days on a pro-rata basis. As a Specialist Mentor you are required to take your annual leave during University holidays. Annual Leave will be paid as part of your annual salary.   We encourage and support hybrid working where the role allows and ensure that you have the necessary equipment to allow you to work flexibly.   We have an extremely competitive Local Government Pension Scheme  with generous employer contributions, as well as providing all staff with access to an occupational health service, financial education, and a comprehensive employee assistance helpline.   We prioritise the wellbeing of our employees - physically, mentally and financially - and we provide a diverse and comprehensive benefits package to support our team.   In addition, all employees have access to:
  • Discounted rates for the university sports and gym facilities
  • An on-site nursery (at Headington Campus; waiting lists for some ages)
