About the Role:  
  
As a Technical Specialist within the school of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Sciences, you will play an integral role in supporting the delivery and continuous improvement of the Biochemistry teaching laboratories. 
  
Reporting to the Technical Operations Manager, you will provide high-level, specialised technical support for teaching activities, with a strong focus on hands-on laboratory operations. You will work collaboratively as part of the Laboratory Services Team, providing technical leadership and supervision to team members supporting biochemistry activities, while also providing support across other laboratory areas as required.
  
Key responsibilities will include managing laboratory consumable stocks, contributing to specialised equipment procurement and maintenance decisions, and developing and maintaining documentation relating to laboratory procedures. You will also contribute to the ongoing improvement of laboratory services, ensuring facilities, equipment and resources are well maintained and fit for purpose to support high-quality teaching and learning.
  
Your responsibilities will include: 

• Technical Leadership: Offer technical guidance, training support, and procedural assistance to students and staff
• Innovative Development: Research, conceptualise, and evaluate innovative techniques to improve and develop laboratory classes
• Health and Safety Compliance: Ensure all staff and students complete Safety Inductions, adhere to Health and Safety protocols, and maintain standard operating procedures for all lab activities
• Laboratory Preparation: Plan and prepare materials and resources for teaching activities in Biochemistry
• Oversight and Instruction: Provide technical oversight, instruction, and scientific guidance to staff and students during classes
• Equipment Management: Maintain general and specialised laboratory equipment, ensuring proper safety checks, servicing, calibration, and repairs. Frequent/ Constant Handling and movement of equipment and materials between laboratories and buildings
• Professional Development: Engage in professional development programs to stay current with operational and technical advances in the discipline

Who we are looking for (selection criteria): 

• A degree qualification in a relevant discipline with considerable relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education and training.
• Strong knowledge and experience in Clinical Biochemistry, with familiarity with teaching laboratory practices and procedures.
• Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership and supervision within a laboratory environment.
• Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide clear technical guidance and support to students and staff.
• Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, exercise sound judgement, solve problems effectively and contribute collaboratively as part of a team.
• A strong commitment to maintaining a safe, high-quality and supportive learning environment for students and staff

Role Requirements:

1. As this is a continuing (permanent) role, you will require permanent work rights in Australia to be considered

The School of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Sciences (DaTS) at Curtin was established in February 2026 following the separation of the Disciplines of Biomedical Science, Laboratory Medicine, Medical Radiation Science, and Pharmacy from the Curtin Medical School. Each discipline has a long-standing history at Curtin University and is well established, academically mature, and professionally accredited.

The School delivers three accredited professional programs, two innovative Biomedical Sciences degrees, an end-on Biomedical Sciences Honours program, a Master of Research, and three PhD programs. DaTS also manages the Faculty of Health Sciences’ teaching Laboratory Services Delivery Team and contributes significantly to research activity through the Curtin Medical Research Institute. The School has strong partnerships with industry, health services, and professional bodies that underpin student placements, workforce development, and research co-supervision.

This is a full time, permanent position, with a salary range between $109,277 - $117,331 (G07) per annum, plus 17% superannuation.
