Position Type/Schedule: This is a Full-Time, exempt position, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Work Location: Illinois Tech, 10 West 35th Street, Chicago, IL 60616.
Work Authorization: Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States, both presently and for the duration of employment with the university
General Description
The Title IX Specialist is responsible for helping to support the university’s compliance with the requirements set forth by the Title IX Educational Amendments Act, the Clery Act, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), and the Illinois Preventing Sexual Violence in Higher Education Act. The Title IX Specialist will report to the Title IX Coordinator and carry out the following responsibilities: remain informed of all changes/updated in guidance/law at the federal and state levels to implement an timely Title IX program to the campus community; manage Title IX investigations; manage informal resolution processes; manage intake reports and provide supportive measures; maintain impeccable internal records of reports received, investigations conducted, and informal resolutions undertaken in both Maxient and Microsoft 360 OneDrive. The Title IX Specialist will also manage the annual online faculty and staff sexual harassment prevention training; conduct educational training workshops with students and employees across the university; assist with the editing of the handbooks and marketing materials; collaborate annually with stakeholders across the campus to develop and implement Title IX marketing campaigns; assist with the completion of the annual Clery, ISPHVE, and state mandated sexual misconduct student survey reports. Manage all activities/reports in the Maxient and Microsoft 365.
Communications
This position requires a person with strong communication skills to communicate clearly verbally and in writing, using effective interpersonal skills to understand complicated Title IX policies and regulations. The person will work directly with the Title IX Coordinator to interpret policy and draft internal and external documents and marketing material. This person will possess active listening skills and accurate note-taking ability as well as strong editing skills for use when editing office resources documents, policy manuals, marketing material, and letter-writing campaigns to make the language clear, accurate, and student-friendly whenever possible.
Customer Service
This position requires effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to demonstrate empathy and use a trauma-informed approach when addressing sexual misconduct. It also requires someone who possesses the ability to engage and build trust with students, campus partners, and community organizations on an ongoing basis, making sure to use language that encourages collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, coordinate, deliver, document, and manage annual campus wide and targeted Title IX training for students and employees, ensuring compliance with applicable state and federal laws. Use varied training methods and maintain open communication with campus partners, participants, and volunteer investigators.
- Lead Title IX events, campaigns, and presentations throughout the year, including Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Seek opportunities to collaborate annually with campus stakeholders in developing these programs.
- Conduct and manage informal resolutions for eligible Title IX reports, meeting with both parties and assisting them in reaching mutually agreed resolutions.
- Conduct and manage Title IX investigations, including fact finding, interviews, review of inculpatory and exculpatory evidence, credibility assessments, case status updates, and report writing. Manage case records in Maxient and Microsoft 365.
- Receive and process reports of Title IX sexual harassment and provide supportive measures to Illinois Tech community members.
- Assist with updates to handbooks and marketing materials and support Public Safety and General Counsel in completing annual Clery and ISPHVE reports and state mandated sexual misconduct student survey reports. Stay informed of current Title IX law through webinars, local workshops, and ongoing training.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Some experience working in higher education or a field related to the position (sexual assault, domestic violence, law, etc.).
- Some familiarity with Title IX law and the Illinois Preventing Sexual Violence in Higher Education Act.
- Must have the ability to leverage technical resources and build their own technical abilities in the execution of work.
- Working knowledge of local resources in the Chicagoland area available to support the campus community is preferred.
Knowledge & Skills
- Familiarity with Title IX regulations and applicable State of Illinois sexual harassment laws.
- Some experience with investigations, complaint handling, and resolution processes is preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications.
- General familiarity with Maxient and Banner systems is preferred.
Supervision & Budget Authority
This position does not currently have direct supervisory responsibilities or budgetary authority.
Physical Environment and Requirements
- Works primarily in a standard office setting, performing administrative, programmatic, and computer-based tasks for the majority of the workday.
- May occasionally attend meetings, events, or perform work-related duties at other locations throughout the University campus, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- May occasionally lift and transport materials, such as boxes, supplies, or event items, weighing up to 15 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Regularly performs repetitive motions, including typing and other computer-related tasks, throughout the workday.
