An analysis by Michael Rampino, a professor in NYU’s Department of Biology, and other researchers shows that over the past 260 million years climate changes and mass extinctions of life were caused by large volcanic eruptions and the subsequent environmental crises. “The Earth’s geologic processes, long considered to be strictly determined by events within the planet’s interior, may in fact be controlled by astronomical cycles in the solar system and the Milky Way Galaxy,” Rampino said.
